Did you know?

Who, besides the artist Manet, painted the picture Breakfast on the Grass?

Artists Edouard Manet and Claude Monet are sometimes confused - after all, they were both French, lived at the same time and worked in the style of impressionism. Even the name of one of Manet's most famous paintings, Breakfast on the Grass, Monet borrowed and wrote his Breakfast on the Grass.

Five corporations are responsible for a quarter of the world's plastic waste 19.04.2024

The problem of plastic pollution is becoming increasingly acute in the modern world. However, an interesting aspect of this problem is that much of the plastic waste can be traced back to certain corporations. An international team of researchers set out to analyze millions of plastic waste, based on data from the past few years. The study's findings were startling: About a quarter of traceable plastic pollution could be traced to just five large corporations. However, there is another side to this problem. Most plastic waste remains unidentified and lacks a design or label, making it impossible to determine its origin. The study found that 24 percent of all traced plastic waste was linked to five major companies. These companies include soft drink makers Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, which are responsible for 11 percent and 5 percent. ... >>

Wireless Body Antenna 09.06.2008

In the UK, they created an antenna for building a wireless wireless network.

Prevention is the key to health, and regular medical examination is the basis of prevention. In the age of informatics, this inspection can be done almost every second: it is enough to place sensors on the human body and constantly transmit the information they collect about the pulse rate, respiration, and other things to the central unit, which sends it over the network using the same cell phone to the doctor's computer.

True, such sensors cannot yet be called miniature and convenient, and one of the reasons is that they have very large antennas. It is not possible to make antennas small, since in this case it would be necessary to increase the signal power and, accordingly, the capacity of electric batteries.

Scientists from Queen's University Belfast, led by Dr. William Scanlon, have found a way to solve the problem. The fact is that one part of the radio signal is absorbed by the human body, and the other part propagates along the surface of his skin. British physicists have managed to dramatically, 50 times, increase the proportion of the signal propagating in the second way.

As a result, the thickness of the antennas that give an acceptable signal was reduced from 34 to 5 mm. It is easy to hide such a plate in clothes so that it does not interfere with the patient, creating a real wearable wireless network that will link biosensors as reliably as computers in the office.
