Like a squirrel in a wheel

Krylov I.A.
Krylov I.A.

Phraseologism: Like the squirrel in the wheel.

Meaning: 1. About a really very busy person who does a lot of different things. 2. About one whose efforts are fruitless, although they require a lot of time and effort.

Origin: From the fable "Squirrel" (1833) by I. A. Krylov (1769-1844). It tells about a squirrel running all day in a wheel on the window of a manor house: "She ran so that her paws only flashed and her magnificent tail swelled." And at the same time, she was firmly convinced that she was busy with a very important matter. To Drozd’s question what she does, Belka proudly replies: “I’m a messenger for the big master, // Well, there’s no time to drink or eat, // Not even to translate the spirit ... // But Drozd commented on Belka’s efforts in his own way : // Yes, - flying away, Drozd said, - it's clear to me, // That you're running, but you're still on the same window. It seems to be torn from the skin, // Yes, but everything does not move forward, // Like a squirrel in a wheel.

Random phraseology:

Scattered from Basseynaya Street.

Meaning:

Usually quoted when talking to children as an admonition and a joke to encourage the child not to be so "scattered from Basseinaya Street".

Origin:

From the poem "That's how absent-minded" (1928) by the poet Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak (1887-1964) about an inattentive, forgetful, eccentric person: "There lived an absent-minded man // On Basseynaya Street. // He sat down on the bed in the morning, // He began to put on a shirt , // He put his hands in the sleeves - // It turned out to be trousers. // He began to put on a coat - // They tell him: it's not right. // He began to put on leggings - // They tell him: not yours. // That's how absent-minded / / From Basseinaya Street!.."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Noise can raise blood cholesterol levels 02.06.2018

American scientists called noise in the workplace a serious factor in developing hypertension, as well as an increase in blood cholesterol levels. They studied the impact of noise on people employed in industrial production.

Approximately one in eight of those working in this field reported hearing problems. It turned out that more than 50% of them faced health problems over time precisely because of exposure to excessive noise in the workplace.

"Approximately a quarter of all workers were exposed to loud noise in the workplace. 24% were found to have hypertension. 28% of participants showed too high cholesterol levels," the researchers said.

According to scientists, the most dangerous, based on the above parameters, are production, construction and mining. At least half of the people working in these industries are systematically exposed to loud noise.
