When was the cow domesticated?

Many townspeople are confused by the names given to cattle. Let's look into this right away. The young male is called a calf, and growing up, it becomes a bull. The female grows from a calf into a heifer and after 2-3 years becomes a cow.

The ox is the first of all domesticated animals. This was probably because males are very docile animals, they can be used for hard work, and females give more milk than is necessary for their own offspring. Sometimes animals were slaughtered for meat, but this is not the main reason for their domestication. Many peoples consider this meat unfit for consumption, often for religious reasons. Breeding and raising cattle for the purpose of obtaining meat is a modern trend.

Although we cannot know the exact time when the ox was first tamed, it is an indisputable fact that people living in the Stone Age already had domestic cattle. We know that the Egyptians bred it about 6000 years ago, and the Babylonians possibly even earlier.

The ox belongs to the genus of bison, or bison (they are sometimes also called wild bulls). They existed in Europe, Asia and North Africa in prehistoric times. The first oxen tamed in Europe were small animals with short horns. They were most likely introduced from Asia during the migration of people in the Stone Age.

Later, already in the Bronze Age, a new, larger type of cattle appeared in Europe.

Today, there are a lot of different breeds all over the world. There are more than 50 of them in Europe alone. One of the oldest is the brown Swiss. And the dairy breed appeared already about 2000 years ago.
