What circumstances led to the death of 38 people who played petanque?

In the Provençal national game of petanque, which consists of throwing balls, it is very difficult to get injured. But there is a case when 38 people died at once in one game. This happened in 1792 in Marseilles: the party members decided to hold it in a monastery, on the territory of which there was a powder warehouse, and cannonballs were used as balls. According to one version, the cause of the explosion was a spark carved by the core, according to another, the fact that one of the balls turned out to be a powder grenade.

Why do flies rub their paws together?

It is already customary to consider flies in the house as an annoying nuisance. They make an annoying buzz and annoy you when they start to crawl over your body. For centuries, the fly was considered… just an annoying irritant. And only in the twentieth century, a man suddenly learned that such a harmless-looking fly is one of his worst enemies.

It was discovered that flies carry pathogenic bacteria that can cause the death of millions of people every year! When you see how a fly rubs its paws against each other, it means that it cleans them, removing from them what has got on them, various garbage. But how dangerous this garbage can be! It can be bacteria of typhus, tuberculosis, dysentery. Flies collect these bacteria on various waste and sewage. Then, if they suddenly sit on our food, these bacteria will get into it, and we can get an infection. How does a fly spread these bacteria?

If you look at a fly through a magnifying glass, you can see that the body of a fly is not at all smooth. Her entire body, antennae and legs are covered with erect hairs. The tongue of the fly is also covered with a sticky liquid. This means that from almost any place where the fly sits, it collects dirt that sticks to its body, paws, tongue. Each of the three pairs of feet has claws and two hairy pads - so a lot of things can stick to them!

Incidentally, the sticky fluid produced in the fly's pads allows it to walk on ceilings or any other surface upside down.

Did you know that the fly is one of the oldest insects? Found the fossilized remains of flies, which are millions of years old. Will we ever get rid of flies altogether? The only thing we can do is stop them from multiplying. And if this is done, the sanitary condition of the whole world will improve significantly!

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Video card GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Eagle OC 27.04.2020

GIGABYTE Technology has officially unveiled the GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Eagle OC 4G graphics accelerator with 6-bit GDDR128 memory.

The video card uses the NVIDIA Turing architecture. The number of CUDA cores is 896, and the amount of GDDR6 memory with an effective frequency of 12 MHz is 000 GB. The novelty boasts factory overclocking. The core frequency of the graphics chip reaches 4 MHz against 1815 MHz for reference products.

The WindForce 2X cooling system is used with two 90mm fans and composite heat pipes. The 3D Active Fan function allows the fans to stop completely under light load, so the accelerator does not make any noise.

A reinforcing metal plate is installed in the back. The dimensions of the novelty are 212 x 121 x 40 mm; in a computer case, it will take up two expansion slots.

Three connectors are provided for connecting monitors - DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b and DVI-D interfaces. To work with the card, it is recommended to use a power supply unit with a power of at least 300 W.
