How do our kidneys function?

The kidneys, which are two flat, bean-shaped hard internal organs, are among the most important organs in our body. They are about 10 centimeters long and are located in the waist area on both sides of the spine.

The kidneys remove unwanted substances from the body. It is just as important for the body to get rid of what it does not need and what it is not able to process, as it is to get what it needs. They also regulate the amount of water and other substances in the blood. On the outside of each kidney, the blood capillaries form small loops that gather into lumps covered with a thin film. There are about 1,5 million of these lumps in each kidney, which are called glomeruli. More blood passes through the kidneys every minute than through any other organ. The glomeruli allow the flow of blood, which carries minute solutes, to pass through the membrane.

The fluid that penetrates is called urine. It collects within each cup-shaped wall surrounding each glomerulus. Very thin tubes called renal tubules carry urine out of the calyces. As urine passes through the thin tubules, the lining cells are involved in the exchange of substances between the blood and urine. Substances that are required by the body are returned back to the blood. Due to this, sugar does not leave the body. A significant part of the water from the tubules also returns to the blood.

Thus, the kidneys help maintain the required moisture in the body. If a person sweats or drinks a little water, the kidneys return more fluid to the blood. Then less urine is produced. The kidney tubules also help regulate the amount of acid in the blood. All small tubules gather inside the kidneys and exit into a cavity, the renal pelvis. Urine then travels through two tubes called ureters that connect each kidney to the bladder.

Modular Framework Laptop 02.03.2021

San Francisco-based startup Framework has developed a thin, light, and powerful laptop that can be "upgraded, customized and repaired like no other laptop."

Framework founder Nirav Patel previously worked at Oculus and Apple and became frustrated with consumer technology companies. According to him, consumer electronics companies depend on the constant production of products and their promotion to consumers. But this approach encourages waste and inefficiency, and ultimately damages the environment. One way to deal with this situation is the new Framework Laptop. Its concept in many ways resembles the approach to desktop systems. The laptop supports the ability to replace components and upgrades. Developers see Framework Laptop not just as a specific product, but as an entire ecosystem.

In the basic version, the laptop is equipped with a 13,5-inch display with a resolution of 2256x1504 pixels and an 11th generation Intel processor. Supports up to 4GB DDR64 RAM and "4TB or more" NVMe SSD. Also available is a 1080p 60fps webcam and a 55Wh battery.

Like some other consumer laptops, the Framework Laptop allows you to replace or upgrade certain components such as RAM, battery, and storage. But the startup realized three additional benefits in its product.

First, owners can also change and upgrade the external components of the case, including the keyboard, screen, bezels (they are attached with a magnet), and connection ports (via an expansion card system). USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, microSD, etc. can be used in various combinations.

Secondly, it is planned to launch a specialized online platform for the sale of compatible modules (own or third-party). Thus, it will not be very difficult for users to find the right and compatible component in case of need for repair or upgrade. Thirdly, in addition to ready-made systems, Framework plans to sell do-it-yourself kits from components selected by customers.
