Microparticles in aerosols increase rain and wind

10.02.2018

Researchers at the University of Maryland have studied how particles of various sizes flying through the atmosphere change the intensity of rain, wind and other weather events. They found that very small aerosol particles (up to 50 nanometers in diameter) significantly accelerate convection and precipitation.

The experiments were carried out in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, where the air is still quite clean. Such a place was chosen to minimize the influence of those particulate matter that are already in the atmosphere in the area. Weather phenomena over part of the state of Amazonas were observed with the help of special instruments. We also built computer models of the influence of very small aerosol particles on air humidity and the formation of large water droplets in clouds.

It turned out that very small particles very intensively collect water drops around them, if there are practically no larger solid particles in the atmosphere. This is especially evident in a warm and humid climate, such as in the territory of Amazonas. When water droplets form, heat is released, and the air heated by this heat rises quickly, that is, intense convection occurs. In this case, the relative humidity of the air can significantly exceed 100 percent. Atmospheric currents are becoming more intense, as a result of which precipitation is accelerating and wind is increasing.

It was previously thought that particulate matter less than 50 nm in diameter was simply too small to play a significant role in atmospheric phenomena. Therefore, they were practically not studied in this context. The results obtained indicate that anthropogenic pollution of the atmosphere and the impact of this pollution on the weather and climate is manifested even where people are not active. Indeed, very small aerosol particles due to their exceptionally low weight can be carried over greater distances than large ones.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Wearable electronics instead of a PC 22.07.2013

Dell is considering entering the wearable electronics market, according to the Guardian, citing Sam Burd, Dell's vice president of personal computing. "We are exploring various ideas in this area," he said.

“While such devices are quite laborious to produce and it is not yet clear how to make them truly user-friendly. However, a smart watch on your wrist is a very interesting and attractive idea,” Bird commented.

Device form factors will continue to change over the next 5 years, according to a Dell spokesperson. Demand for desktop PCs will continue, but it will be small compared to mobile devices. The put on electronics - one of the most perspective directions, consider in Dell. This opinion is shared not only by Dell, but also by Google, which in April 2013 released a trial batch of Google Glass augmented reality glasses intended for application developers. The cost of the device was $1,5 thousand.

With a tiny LCD screen placed a short distance from the eye, Google Glass is able to show the route and messages from a mobile phone to which they are connected via Bluetooth. The device belongs to the segment of wearable electronics, as it is worn on the body. Google plans to release it to the general public in 2014.

According to Juniper Research forecast, 2013 million such devices will be sold in the world in 15, which also include smart watches Sony SmartWatch, Nike FuelBand, as well as various medical sensors and devices. By 2017, the market volume, according to analysts, will increase to 70 million devices.

According to some information, "smart" watches are also being developed by Apple. In an interview at the D11 conference in May, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company is also interested in this area, stressing that a device worn on the wrist is more interesting from a commercial point of view, as it forces people to wear glasses. more difficult.

Dell's entry into a new market could help improve its financial performance, notes the Guardian, and better prepare for the post-PC era. Dell is the world's third largest personal computer maker, but demand has been declining lately in favor of devices in newer form factors. According to IDC, in the first quarter of 2013, PC shipments to the global market decreased by 14%, and last year - by 3%.
