How do ants help birds get rid of parasites?

If you stir up an anthill, the ants begin to splash acid at the offender. This is used by birds who, with the help of formic acid, get rid of skin parasites.

Who are war ants?

One of the most amazing and remarkable creatures in the world is the ant. There are over 3500 different types of ants and they can be found all over the world.

All ants are very similar to each other, except for the size. They can be tiny - 1,5 mm long, or huge, reaching 50 mm in length.

All ants live in colonies. But there are huge differences in their way of life and habits.

For example, one of the most interesting species is war ants. They eat living beings! In Africa, these ants are called stray. They come out in thousands of armies and kill everything that comes in their way. You may ask: "How can a small insect - an ant - eat and kill everything in its path?" Do not forget that there are thousands and thousands of them. Even the largest animals run away when approached. And if the animal can't escape, then it's over!

The belligerent ants will kill and eat him, no matter who it is - a fly, a crocodile or a wounded lion! War ants of America only eat small items. They are called legionnaire ants. They can be found in the southern United States, as well as in Central and South America. Legionnaire ants march in formation, consisting of thousands of individual ants. In Mexico, people leave their homes as they walk. Ants eat all cockroaches, rats, mice and lizards that may be in houses. People are returning to houses in which there are no parasites or rodents left!

Did you know that there are ants that have their own slaves? These are Amazon ants. All their worker ants are also soldiers at the same time, so they do not get food and do not care for the young. They attack other ants to capture slaves to do their job. They raid anthills of a certain type of black ant, kill anyone who tries to resist them, and then take the cocoons and larvae with them. When black ants emerge from their cocoons, they work in the Amazonian ant colony like slaves!

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Additionally, specially designed T-shirts and shorts are available for convenience, to which a mini air conditioner can be attached. The device can oh ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Odor meter 17.08.2011

A device for measuring the strength of smells, manufactured in the USA, needs a sensor in a human nose. At the front end of the device, outwardly resembling a telescope, there is a swivel ring with holes of different diameters. On the sides there are two activated carbon filters, also covered with discs with holes of different sizes.

By inserting his nose into the other end of the pipe, the odor specialist draws in air and smells it. By turning the front and side discs, it is possible to dilute the 50nm odorous air with purified air that has passed through the filters.

A measure of the strength of an odor is the degree of dilution required to make it cease to be perceived. Dilution is possible up to 500 times (without dilution, such a "flavor" literally knocks you down). Since there are two carbon filters, the device even gives some "stereoscopicity", allowing you to determine the direction from which the smell comes.

The device is used in environmental and health research - say, does an oil refinery poison the atmosphere?
