Juniper prickly (juniper red, pencil tree)

Juniperus prickly or red, or pencil tree (Juniperus oxycedrus) - evergreen coniferous trees, a species of the genus Juniperus (Juniperus) of the Cypress family (Cupressaceae).

Shrubs or trees up to 5-10 m high and with a crown diameter of up to 1 m. The crown is ovate-conical, sometimes umbrella-shaped in old age.

The bark is light gray, smooth, reddish or yellow-brown on one-year-old shoots, green on the terminal ones.

The branches are straight, outstretched or directed upwards; twigs are short, blunt-triangular.

The leaves are close together, protruding, dense, linear with a long pointed tip, 15-20 mm long, 1,3-2 mm wide, with two white longitudinal stripes, shiny green below with a prominent longitudinal keel, without a gland.

Dioecious plant. Fruits are solitary, almost sessile, the smallest 6-7 mm and 5-6 mm in diameter, the largest 11-12 mm, almost spherical, glossy, red-brown. Seeds in a cone 2-3, sometimes 1 or 4, broadly ovate, slightly triangular.

Found throughout the Mediterranean from Morocco and Portugal in the west to Iran in the east, the northern limit of the natural range is in southern France. Under natural conditions, it grows in the lower belt at an altitude of up to 300-400 m (Crimea, the northern part of Western Transcaucasia) and up to 1600 m above sea level in dry, light forests, in shiblyak and maquis, and sometimes on rocky slopes and rocks.

Prickly juniper is very drought-resistant, but thermophilic.

Grows slowly.

The wood of the tree is heavy (specific gravity 0,66-0,75), very strong, hard, reddish, with white sapwood, resistant to rotting, and provides building and ornamental material.

In plantings it is very decorative. An excellent ornamental tree for gardens in the dry south.

The fruits contain 1,5% essential oil and are an aphrodisiac and diuretic. Dry distillation of the tree, like other species, gives a brown oily liquid - Juniper oil (Oleum eupyreumaticum cadinum), which is used as an antihelminthic, for skin diseases and the production of some cosmetics.

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>
