How did a supersonic fighter pilot shoot himself?

In 1956, the pilot of the American supersonic fighter F-11 "Tiger" Tom Ethridge went on a test flight. His task was to climb to 6 km and begin to descend, then fire a volley of guns at the 4 km mark and repeat the volley at an altitude of 2 km. A few seconds after the second shot, Ethridge felt a blow, after some time the engines turned off, but the pilot was already flying up to the airfield and managed to make an emergency landing and survive. An investigation into the incident revealed that the plane was hit by its own bullets fired in the first salvo.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where do mushrooms come from?

Have you ever had the impression that at dawn after a rainy day, as if under the influence of witchcraft, mushrooms appear in the very place where there was nothing yesterday? As you probably understand yourself, witchcraft has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Mushrooms (both toadstools and champignons - anyway) reproduce through spores. A typical representative of these amazing plants consists of a cylindrical stem - "legs", on which lies a round "hat" on top. On the leg there is often a narrow growth in the form of a ring. On the underside of the cap there are many grooves radiating from the center to its edges. Spores mature on the plates that form the walls of these grooves. Spores serve the same purpose - reproduction - as seeds, but there is a significant difference between them, and they should not be confused.

Reproduction using spores is a more primitive and ancient method. The main guarantor of success in this case is the number of spores: each fungus produces so many of them that at least some of them are carried by the wind onto favorable soil. If a spore consisting of only one or a few cells enters a warm and damp place where there are sufficient nutrients, it begins to grow and divide.

As a result of these processes, long chains of cells are formed, similar to thin threads. Intertwined and interconnected, these threads form a mycelium, or mycelium. Tiny nodules appear on various parts of the mycelium, no larger than a pinhead. Subsequently, mushrooms grow from them.

So, as you can see, although it sometimes seems to us that mushrooms grow overnight, in fact, what we observe on the surface of the earth is just part of a long process. It starts at the moment when the spores leave the mother fungus, which, by the way, could happen quite far from the place where you found your russula or boletus!

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Radio modem based on CC1310 01.03.2016

Texas Instruments has released new software for the CC1310 that turns the chip into a complete radio modem controlled by AT commands. The CC1310 system on a chip consists of a Cortex-M3 microcontroller and a Sub1GHz radio, which allows you to create complete devices with wireless data transmission on a chip. However, in many cases it is required to add a radio channel to an already existing system with its own microcontroller. The new firmware (firmware) allows to solve this problem in a short time and with a minimum of engineering effort.

The rfEasyLinkNp software turns the CC1310 into a network processor, ie. into a microchip that completely takes care of all the tasks associated with wireless data transmission. At the same time, the system designer does not need to dive into the internal structure of the CC1310, packet formation features, modulation parameters, etc. This approach is often used by radio module manufacturers.

To add a wireless protocol, just read the description of a dozen AT commands. For example, to receive data, the main system controller sends the AT+RX command to the network processor , which in turn outputs the received data to the UART.

The network processor can do address broadcasting and has message filtering when receiving, which allows you to organize a "Star" network of hundreds and even thousands of devices in the 868 MHz band.

The unique feature of rfEasyLinkNp software is its completely open source code. This allows the advanced developer to add new AT commands or modify existing ones. Additionally, the network processor contains commands to generate a continuous carrier and send packets for transmission error testing, which will be extremely useful when testing devices in the production process.
