Mole of history

William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare

Phraseologism: Mole of history.

Meaning: About the invisible movement of history, the latent ripening in the depths of human civilization of major events, changes, cataclysms.

Origin: The expression is based on an image from the tragedy "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) (act 1, scene 5). Hamlet, having heard the voice of his late father coming from under the ground, exclaims (translated by A. L. Sokolovsky): "You dig nicely, old mole! // You are fit to be a miner." Thanks to the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831), this image turned into a stable phrase "the mole of history", which is used, of course, already outside the Shakespearean context and means some logic of historical events, not yet known to man. In his "Lectures on the History of Philosophy", where Hegel reveals the content of the concept of "world spirit" introduced by him, the philosopher says that the history of this "spirit" is the history of mankind itself. He writes that the world spirit "is a movement forward", it is "internal continuous work (as Hamlet says about the spirit of his father: "Good work, honest mole!") - until he, having grown strong in himself, now breaks so that it falls apart, the earth's crust, which separated him from his sun, from his idea. Later, this expression was used by A. I. Herzen, K. Marx and their followers, who wrote about the "steady course of the revolutionary movement", about the inevitability of changing one system to another, etc.

Random phraseology:

Sweet burden of glory.

Meaning:

About fame, which amuses pride (jokingly-iron.) (jokingly-iron.).

Origin:

Title Ch. 7 novel "The Golden Calf" (1931) by Soviet writers Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Evgeny Petrov (1903-1942).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Optical discs are getting more expensive 04.01.2013

According to Robert Wong, chairman of CMC Magnetics, Taiwan's largest manufacturer of optical discs, these products will soon become more expensive. The reason given is the change in the industry, which is expressed in the fact that some Japanese and Taiwanese companies stop producing optical media. It is said that this process will continue next year, so that in the second half of the year, optical discs will rise in price by about 50%.

It's no secret that the golden age of optical discs is over and the demand for them is falling. The market was expected to shrink by 10-15% this year. It is curious that the real figure, according to CMC, will be less - less than 10%. Two factors helped offset the downward trend. On the one hand, demand for DVDs is still growing in emerging markets. On the other hand, consumers in countries with mature markets remain interested in Blu-ray discs.

Interestingly, some manufacturers, interested in quickly emptying storage space, may, on the contrary, reduce the price of disks, which, according to the head of CMC, may negatively affect the company's performance in the fourth quarter of 2013.

As a reminder, CMC Magnetics was the first non-Japanese manufacturer to obtain the right to produce 6 GB BD-R DL 50x discs. The Taiwanese company began mass production of such discs in autumn 2010. It is noteworthy that at the moment in the catalog on the manufacturer's website there are only 25 GB Blu-ray discs. These are BD-R 2x and BD-RE 2x media distributed under the Philips brand.
