How did Captain Cook become the first navigator to avoid the loss of personnel from scurvy?

Between 1768 and 1771, the English navigator James Cook made his first circumnavigation of the world. The expedition he led on the ship "Endeavour" left 80 people and only 50 returned. The main cause of death for sailors was scurvy - the true curse of the tropics in those days.

But in the second round-the-world expedition of Captain Cook, the crew of his corvette "Resolution" did not lose a single person from scurvy. The reason for such a completely unusual phenomenon for that time was the inclusion of sauerkraut in the diet of sailors.

As Cook noted in the ship's log, at first it was impossible to force sailors to eat a foreign product, but the problem was soon solved. Cook ordered the officers to eat cabbage in front of his subordinates, savoring and praising it in every possible way.

As a result, the most curious sailors also wanted to try the delicacy, and after them everyone began to eat cabbage, and in large quantities, so that even portions had to be limited.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Which fruit was formerly known as the Chinese gooseberry?

The symbol of New Zealand - the kiwi fruit - was brought there from China and was nicknamed the Chinese gooseberry. When New Zealanders began exporting it to the US in the 1950s, the name was unacceptable due to the Cold War and heavy duties on the berries. Then the name "kiwifruit" was coined in honor of another symbol of the country - the kiwi bird. Since kiwifruit has been registered as a trademark, other exporting countries simply call it kiwifruit.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Sliding car 03.10.2002

The Swiss company "Rinspeed" showed at this year's motor show in Geneva the sliding car "Presto". At the touch of a button, this open convertible extends 75 centimeters, giving room for two more passengers or a bulky load.

Two more features of the Presto are an unusual engine and the absence of rear signal lights. The engine, converted from a Mercedes diesel engine, runs on a mixture of diesel fuel and natural gas, which reduces the harmfulness of exhaust emissions. And the red lights at the back have been replaced with LED displays. On it, before the turn, the word "turn" appears with an indication of the direction, when braking, the inscription "stop" is lit, and when the driver does not take any action, the name "Presto" is lit on the scoreboard.

Serial production is not planned yet.
