How many people have walked on the surface of the moon?

On July 21, 1969, the lunar cabin "Eagle" of the American spacecraft "Apollo 11" landed on the surface of the Moon (in the southwestern part of the Sea of Tranquility).

Neil Armstrong, commander of the spacecraft, became the first person to set foot on the surface of the moon. Lunar cabin pilot Edwin Aldrin joined him 20 minutes later. After 1 hour 44 minutes, Aldrin returned to the cockpit, and 10 minutes after him, Armstrong. On July 21, the astronauts launched from the Moon, having spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on it.

A few months later, on November 19 of the same year, the lunar cabin "Interpid" of the Apollo 12 spacecraft landed in the eastern part of the Ocean of Storms, from which the commander of the ship Charles Conrad and the pilot of the lunar cabin Alan Bean twice went to the surface of the Moon. In total, Konrad spent 7 hours 26 minutes on the surface of the Moon, Bean - 6 hours 34 minutes. On November 20, 31 hours and 32 minutes after landing, the Interpid cabin left the surface of the Earth's natural satellite.

In addition to these four American astronauts, none of the inhabitants of the Earth has yet been to the surface of the Moon.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where do the slowest sharks live and what do they prey on?

The northernmost of the sharks, the Greenland polar shark, swims very slowly - its speed does not exceed 2 km / h. At the same time, it was noticed that she preys on seals that swim faster. It is believed that mostly sleeping seals become its prey. They avoid falling asleep on the ice so as not to fall into the clutches of polar bears, but instead fall prey to sharks.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Fighting ship foulers - following the example of whales 17.06.2010

A significant problem for the navy is marine plants, corals, molluscs, worms and other animals that settle on the ship's hull. Gradually, they increase the resistance to movement so much that the ship has to be put in a dry dock and cleaned of buildup. The operation can take up to two years.

True, now there are poisonous paints that almost completely prevent unwanted passengers from sticking. But the poison gradually dissolves in water, causing great harm to the environment.

The German zoologist Christoph Baum recently discovered that in the skin of some whales there are the thinnest tubules through which mucus with enzymes gradually oozes, dissolving the protein glue that sea creatures attach to any surface. Therefore, the skin of the whale remains clean, and nothing interferes with its fast swimming.

This discovery prompted American shipbuilders to the idea of applying harmless slimy substances to the surface of the bottom on the same principle. A layer of mucus 0,7 mm thick appears on the steel body, to which it is difficult for various larvae or algae spores to attach.

If, however, individual organisms nevertheless attach themselves, the flow of water soon washes away the mucus along with the foulers, and a fresh protective layer comes out of the holes. In addition, mucus lubrication reduces water resistance.
