Angry Birds brought in $67,6 million in revenue

Rovio Entertainment, the developer of the popular game Angry Birds, recorded a profit in 2011 of $67,6 million on revenue of $106,3 million, the company's press service reported.

Rovio's line of games included three products in 2011: Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio - all based on Angry Birds characters, the official release notes. All three products are available in both paid and free versions.

At the end of last year, users in total completed 648 million downloads, and the volume of monthly active audience on all platforms reached 200 million users.

Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said that in 2012 Rovio will continue to invest heavily in business development. The company has been doing this throughout the past year, during which its staff grew from 28 to 224 employees.

The influence of microbes on the geological processes of the Earth 08.05.2019

Microbiologists from the University of Tennessee (USA) have found that microbes play a big role - almost the same as volcanoes - in geological processes, as a result of which carbon is transported from the surface of the earth to depth.

The earth contains a huge amount of carbon - even more than in the atmosphere or in the oceans, according to scientists. Some of this carbon is slowly released from rocks as CO2 (carbon dioxide) via volcanoes and hot springs, and is an important part of the natural carbon cycle. At the same time, volcanoes emit even more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than humans. Microbes, as it turned out, can slightly delay this release.

The researchers were able to draw this conclusion by studying the Costa Rica subduction zone - the place where the ocean floor (otherwise: oceanic crust) sinks under the continental plate. The results showed that microbes absorb and trap a small but measurable amount of carbon sinking in a trench off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Microbes can also participate in chemical processes that draw out even more carbon, leaving cement-like "veins" of the mineral calcite in the crust.

The unexpected results are important for estimating how much carbon moves from the Earth's surface to its interior, especially on geologic time scales. The study is part of the Deep Carbon Meets Biological Observatory's Subduction project.
