When was the use of computers to create special effects in movies considered a scam?

The 1982 film Tron was one of the first films to make extensive use of CGI for special effects. However, the picture was excluded from the list of Oscar nominees for visual effects. The competition commission substantiated this by the fact that the filmmakers cheated using computers.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why are rice grains thrown at the bride and groom?

Although this custom is not so common, it also originated a very long time ago. The wedding ceremony, like many other important events in life, is full of symbols. This means that we perform certain rites as symbols of what we would like to wish, avoiding direct expressions.

The use of rice is one such symbol that has been featured in marriage ceremonies for centuries. In ancient tribes, for example, the process of eating rice together meant that from that moment on, he and she became husband and wife, that is, eating together symbolizes living together, and rice indicates local food.

In some cases, rice at a wedding was not used to bring the bride and groom together, but to protect them from evil spirits. It was believed that evil spirits are always present at weddings, and by throwing rice after the newlyweds, people appease the spirits, and they do not harm the newlyweds. But for most of the ancients, rice was a symbol of fertility, procreation, and the custom of throwing rice at the newlyweds reminds of just this. That is, with this we seem to want to wish: "May you have many children and abundance in your life together!"

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

P2PE V2 specification will make card data theft pointless 14.07.2015

The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) has published an important update to one of eight security standards related to the use of payment cards.

According to PCI SSC, the update will simplify the development and use of solutions that provide data encryption based on the Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) principle. In the case of P2PE, encryption is performed by a tamper-resistant module directly at the reading point, which makes the data from the card inaccessible to conventional reading methods and reduces the value of the stolen data to an attacker.

The PCI Point-to-Point Encryption Solution Requirements and Testing Procedures Version 2.0 specification is intended for providers of P2PE components and services that fulfill P2PE requests and can be built into P2PE solutions. Along with certified P2PE solutions and applications, the PCI Council will maintain a list of certified P2PE components, making it easier for integrators to select them.

In addition, the new version of the standard gives merchants the ability to implement and manage their own P2PE solutions at the point of sale.
