Kupena squat (kupena low), Polygonatum humile. Botanical description of the plant, area, methods of application, cultivation

Kupena squat (kupena low)

A perennial herbaceous plant 12-30 cm high, its underground part lives for several years, and the stem and leaves die off for the winter. Rhizome 2-3 mm thick, whitish, cord-like, located horizontally in the soil, gives several shoots in spring. The stem is straight, ribbed, almost naked.

The leaves are alternate, elliptical or oblong-lanceolate, 3-8 cm long, about 4,5 cm wide, sessile, semi-amplex, pointed, green on both sides, the upper side is shiny, smooth, covered with hairs along the veins on the underside. Peduncles are bare, arcuately curved, bearing one flower each, emerge from the axils of the middle leaves.

Flowers drooping, in small numbers. Perianth campanulate, white, with greenish teeth, 15-18 mm long, about 4,5 mm wide. Filaments of stamens with papillary tubercles, above the middle attached to the perianth. Blooms in May - June. Flowers are pollinated mainly by bumblebees, self-pollination is possible.

Kupena remotely resembles a lily of the valley, especially in the general appearance of bell flowers. They also have distinctive features. The faceted stems are bought long, curved with a yoke, and in the lily of the valley they are short and straight, for which they are called arrows. The leaves are bought small, and the lily of the valley - large and basal - stick out of the ground.

The fruit is a poisonous (like the May lily of the valley) bluish-black berry with 1-9 seeds. The fruits ripen in August.

East Asian view - Siberia, Far East of Russia, China, Japan.

It grows in sparse birch and pine forests, along their outskirts, less often in dry forest, steppe meadows and meadow hillsides.

Listed in the Red Book of the Tyumen region.

Kupena rhizomes contain a large amount of mucus, starch, ascorbic acid, alkaloids, fructose, glucose, arabinose. All parts of kupena, and especially its fruits, contain cardiac glycosides - convallarin, convallamarin, convallatoxin. The leaves contain a large amount of ascorbic acid (330 mg%), flavonoids (cosmosins, vitexin glycosides).

Young shoots and starch-rich rhizomes are edible.

Kupena is a poisonous medicinal plant. The medicinal properties of kupena are explained by the high content of alkaloids and glycosides. Kupena also contains a large amount of mucus and starch, which explains its use for the treatment of the digestive tract. Kupena has expectorant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, blood-purifying, emetic, softening and enveloping effects.

Despite the significant content of cardiac glycosides in various parts of kupene, it has not yet found application in scientific medicine. This is due to its pronounced toxicity and low therapeutic activity against diseases of the cardiovascular system compared to other plant sources of cardiac glycosides.

Despite the numerous medicinal properties of kupena, one should not forget that this plant (all its parts) is poisonous. In order to take kupen inside, you need to be very careful. When using lotions and compresses, do not forget that a burn is possible. If signs of poisoning appear after the use of kupena, they should be treated in the same way as poisoning with cardiac glycosides.

Kupena is used in folk medicine and veterinary medicine, and is also bred as an ornamental plant. Despite the poisonousness of the plant, in nature, spotted deer and Altai deer feed on it (as well as lily of the valley).

Kupena is used in veterinary medicine, because. infusion and tincture of kupena increase the tone and amplitude of pendulum-like contractions of the intestinal muscles, tone up the contractile function of the scar in ruminants.

To improve the appetite, the animals were given roots ground into flour or a weak alcohol tincture of this herb. Such veterinary drugs help animals to better secrete gastric juice. In the old days, peasants treated livestock for skin gadfly, applying rhizomes of kupena to wounds, herbal potion baked in ashes brings hatched larvae out, relieves itching and pain on the affected area of the body.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Controlling lightning with a laser beam 23.01.2023

Lightning is one of nature's most energetic phenomena, releasing millions of volts in a fraction of a second, which can be devastating - power outages, fires, injury and even death.

For a long time, the best way to protect yourself from lightning was considered a lightning rod - a huge metal stick attached to the tallest building. This simple design essentially draws electricity and guides it safely into the ground. However, one of the problems is that such lightning rods have a limited range - for example, a 10-meter lightning rod can only protect an area with a radius of 10 meters around it. That is, to protect a large building or airport, a giant lightning rod would actually be required. But it looks like scientists have found a way.

Physicist Aurélien Houart of the Applied Optics Laboratory at the French National Center for Scientific Research in Paris and his colleagues endured hours of thunderstorm activity to test whether a laser could deflect lightning strikes away from critical infrastructure.

The researchers demonstrated the operation of a new, more efficient system - in fact, scientists have learned how to deflect lightning discharges using a powerful laser aimed at the sky.

According to study author Jean-Pierre Wolf, a laser lightning rod is a laser beam aimed at clouds during a storm - thus it paves the path of least resistance for the passage of electricity. Moreover, a laser beam can extend much further than a lightning rod, and therefore protect a large area.

The scientists explain that when high-power laser pulses are emitted into the atmosphere, filaments of very intense light are formed inside the beam. They permeate the nitrogen and oxygen molecules that are present in the air, which in turn release free electrons to move. As a result, ionized air, which is also called "plasma", becomes an electrical conductor.

To demonstrate their concept, the scientists developed a laser system with an average power of 1 kW and pulsing about a thousand times per second, releasing 1 joule of energy per pulse.

The laser system was installed on top of Zentis, which is the highest mountain in the Swiss Alps. Scientists note that the laser was installed next to the tower, which annually attracts about a hundred lightning strikes.

The researchers note that the laser was aimed at the sky near the top of the tower - the main purpose was to try to attract lightning to the beam before it reached the tower's usual lightning rod. During the testing period, scientists recorded four lightning strikes.
