Occupational Safety and Health / Legislative basis for labor protection

In accordance with GOST 12.4.011-89. SSBT. "Means of protection for workers. General requirements and classification" personal protective equipment depending on the destination are divided into following classes:

special protective clothing (overalls, semi-overalls, jackets, trousers, sheepskin coats, dressing gowns, coats, short coats, short fur coats, capes, raincoats, half raincoats, shirts, shorts, vests, dresses, sundresses, blouses, skirts, dust caps, aprons);
leg protection means (boots, low boots, boots, low shoes, shoes, galoshes, boots, shoe covers, footcloths), including against vibration and electric current;
hand protection products (mittens, gloves, palms, fingertips, wristlets, armlets, elbow pads), including dermatological products (pastes, ointments, creams);
head protection equipment (helmets, helmets, balaclavas, hats, berets, hats, caps, scarves, mosquito nets);
face protection means (protective face shields);
eye protection (goggles);
hearing protection (anti-noise helmets, earmuffs, earmuffs);

In addition, PPE can be universal. In this case, they provide protection against all or major harmful and hazardous factors (for example, respiratory PPE that protects against all types of dust).

Personal protective equipment designed for specific working conditions or professions is called special (overalls for miners, geologists, lumberjacks, etc.).

Uniform and corporate clothing, which are provided to employees in some firms, does not apply to PPE.

Cyborg cockroaches 19.03.2015

Scientists from Texas A&M University (USA) equipped a cockroach with a microchip, from which two electrodes were directed to the nerves that control the legs of the insect. This made it possible to control the movements of the "cyborg" with the help of electrical impulses and to control the movement of the insect from the remote control.

In laboratory tests, researchers were able to control the movements of a cockroach about 70% of the time, and in field tests, up to 60%. The microchip is powered by a tiny lithium battery, so that the total mass of the "backpack" placed on the insect's back does not exceed three grams. Scientists noted that although cockroaches are able to carry loads five times their body weight, in the end this can reduce their endurance.

Scientists plan to use such cockroaches as miniature robots that will perfectly cope with movements in hard-to-reach places, in addition, cameras and sensors can be attached to their body to collect the necessary data. Further research will be aimed at studying the possible habituation of insects to the effects of electrical impulses and the potential failure to execute commands.
