Which pharaoh built the largest pyramid?

The largest Egyptian pyramid is located in the city of Giza (near Cairo). It was built by Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops), who ruled the country around 2551-2528 BC, and bears his name.

Herodotus, passing on the ancient Egyptian tradition of building the pyramids, characterizes this pharaoh as a despot who plunged Egypt into disaster. The height of the Great Pyramid (as it is often called) is 137 meters (originally 146,6 meters), and the length of each of its sides at the base is 230,38 meters. It was built from 2,34 million cubic meters of stone blocks. According to Herodotus, 100 thousand people worked on the construction of the Great Pyramid for 20 years.

On bulk platforms and wooden scaffolding, blocks weighing about 5 tons were delivered to the right place. They were so skillfully processed that the gaps between them did not exceed 0,5 millimeters. The pyramids were faced with polished white limestone slabs.

To date, this lining has almost completely flown around, and therefore the Great Pyramid (as well as all others) does not reach its original height.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Recognition of people at a distance by heartbeat 30.06.2019

Biometric identification has already become a part of everyday life - there are fingerprint sensors even in budget smartphones. There are systems built on face recognition, gait and vein pattern. However, some of them require close contact with a person, while others cannot boast of high accuracy. Both shortcomings are eliminated in the development called Jetson, commissioned by the Pentagon.

Jetson uses an infrared laser to record the heartbeat. The fact is that the heartbeat is unique like a fingerprint and cannot be changed. The Jetson works up to 200m and gets the job done even through light clothing. Under good conditions, the identification accuracy exceeds 95%.

Unfortunately, warm clothing is an insurmountable obstacle for the Jetson. In addition, it takes about 30 seconds to collect data for analysis, during which the person must be relatively still. Finally, a sample is needed for recognition, that is, Jetson can recognize a person only if his "cardioprint" is already in the database.

However, even if the military or intelligence agencies consider the technology unsuitable for their purposes, it is hoped that the achievements accumulated during the creation of Jetson will find application in medicine.
