How did the designers of the Mako Shark concept car outsmart their boss?

In 1961, General Motors developed the XP-755 Mako Shark concept car, which later became the prototype for the third generation Chevrolet Corvette. The distinctive shape of the car was largely inspired by the mako shark, which is reflected in the name. Head of Design Bill Mitchell ordered it to be painted in the same way as a stuffed real mako shark, caught by him on a fishing trip and hanging on the wall in his office: so that the dark blue-gray upper part smoothly transitions into a lighter bottom. Unable to complete this task exactly, the designers stole a scarecrow from the office and repainted it the way they could paint the car. Mitchell did not notice the catch and was pleased with the work.

In what countries are some girls raised as boys?

In Afghanistan and Pakistan, there is a tradition of raising girls as boys - such children are called "bacha posh". Such a remedy is resorted to by families in which only girls are born, which, according to local customs, is considered almost a shame for the family. Bacha posh is given a masculine name, dressed in boyish clothes and has a short haircut, and has more opportunities to appear in public, go to school and play sports. However, at the onset of puberty, bacha posh has to return to the life of a girl again, losing all male rights, and then getting married. Often they become bad spouses because they have not learned how to properly cook, sew and do other work that is considered feminine.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Loneliness is dangerous 23.05.2023

Scientists at Harvard University have found a way to preserve longevity. Turns out it's all about social relationships.

The results of the study proved that frequent and active communication in the long run helps to improve health and prolong life. Social preparation helps to counter the effects of chronic stress.

Harvard Medical School psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Robert Woldinger believes that the formula for health and happiness depends largely on positive relationships with other people.

If you regularly feel lonely and isolated from other people, Waldinger warned, it could be as dangerous as becoming obese or smoking half a pack of cigarettes a day. Abandoned social skills can atrophy like unused muscles.

Scientists do not give any clear recommendations. They only remind you that the point here is not the number of friends or acquaintances, but how fully you communicate with them. Even if you have a few close friends with whom you communicate daily, it can be a real medicine and have a positive effect on life expectancy.

But scientists recommend avoiding isolation. They believe that it is important to be more active in going out. After all, social life can also increase mental well-being. And here scientists include even communication with neighbors or sellers in the store.
