Which surgical technique has been improved in the 21st century under the influence of Leonardo's work?

Leonardo da Vinci obtained permission to dissect cadavers and produced detailed drawings describing many human organs. Looking at them, British cardiac surgeon Francis Wells rethought a method of operating on the mitral valve of the heart, which prevents backflow into the left atrium. Traditionally, when a valve malfunctioned, surgeons reduced its diameter, but this further limited the maximum blood flow. Wells, inspired by the work of Leonardo, came up with new prostheses devoid of such shortcomings, and successfully operated on more than two thousand patients.

Who and when attacked ground targets from aircraft with darts?

In combat aviation, not only bombs and missiles were used against ground targets. During the First World War, flechettes, or metal darts, were widely used. Pointed arrows the size of a pencil, being thrown out of special cassettes, when approaching the ground, developed lethal speed and strength and effectively hit clusters of infantry or cavalry, and the whistle accompanying their approach was a kind of psychic attack on people and horses. Flechettes were invented by the French and were also adopted by the German and Russian armies.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Harm of burnt food 26.03.2023

Products after cooking may be slightly burnt. It is in this crust that danger lurks.

Burnt food was studied by scientists from Stockholm University. At the same time, they began their research in 2002. For more than 20 years, they have collected enough information confirming the fact that such food is dangerous.

Any chef will tell you that one of the main requirements in cooking is to observe the temperature regime. And it's not just about taste. For example, foods such as potatoes or bread, when heated to 120 degrees, begin to brown. This is the reaction in which acrylamide appears in the products. It is this substance that is the most dangerous carcinogen.

Fatima Saleh, Associate Professor at the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences at the University of Beirut, says that many diseases have been linked to acrylamides. It can cause cancer and dementia. It also weakens the natural immunity of a person, which makes him vulnerable to various pathogens. Scientists believe that acrylamide is one of the factors in the development of breast cancer in women.

Another danger of acrylamide is that it is not excreted from the body, does not disengage, but gradually accumulates. Subsequently, the higher its concentration, the more harm the body receives. In fact, it is a slow poison that gradually kills a person.

Therefore, doctors advise avoiding fried crust and burnt food. It is better to remove such a crust, rather than eat it. Even if you really love such food, remember that it can be deadly. It does more harm than good. The food industry is already taking the first steps towards reducing acrylamide in food.
