Which athletes should not wish for a fair wind?

Ski jumpers should not be wished for a fair wind - it only harms them. A headwind is much better, thanks to which an air cushion is created in front of the skier in flight, and he flies further. To start the jump, athletes are given a certain time, during which the coaches try to choose the optimal start time, taking into account the wind. The change in wind during the course of the competition can make the conditions for the participants unequal: if the skier got only a tailwind, his chances for medals, even with the best technique, are sharply reduced. Although in 2010, the rules of the competition were amended, which take into account the strength of the wind in the formula for the final score of the jump.

What are nerves?

Cells whose job it is to inform the body about environmental conditions are called nerve cells. In the lower forms of life, nerve cells are located on the skin and directly transmit information to the internal organs of the body. But in humans and other complex organisms, most of the nerve cells are located in the body, although they can receive "messages" from the skin with the help of thin "antennas".

The task of nerve cells is to transmit information throughout the body, each message to the appropriate place. The nerve fibers that carry these messages are like a high-performance cable.

There are four main types of nerve cells, or nerves. The body contains completely independent sets of nerve cells, each of which is adapted to perform certain tasks. Cells of one type receive information about heat, cold, light and pain from the outside world and transmit this information inside the body. They can be called sensory. Cells of another type can be called motor. They receive impulses from sensory cells and respond to them by sending signals to various parts of the body, such as muscles and glands. The resulting reaction is called a reflex.

For example, a heat signal causes certain muscles to react, and the hand pulls away from a hot object. Nerve cells of the third type are busy with communication. They transmit signals in the body over long distances. They connect motor cells in one part of the body with sensory cells in another. The fourth type of nerve cells transmits messages from the outside world. Information about cold, heat and pain is transmitted to the brain, where it is "translated" into sensations.

Rose oil instead of pesticides 02.04.2024

In search of safer and more environmentally sustainable methods of plant protection, scientists around the world are exploring alternative approaches to the use of pesticides. One of these promising areas is the use of essential oils.

Researchers from Tokyo University of Science, led by Professor Genichiro Arimura, conducted a series of experiments to evaluate the potential of essential oils in protecting plants from pests. Particular attention was paid to the effectiveness of rose oil (REO) in protecting tomatoes from insect pests.

The results of the study showed that treating tomato plants with REO significantly increased their resistance to harmful insects. Tomatoes treated with rose oil had less leaf damage caused by moths and mites compared to untreated plants. Field trials also confirmed the effectiveness of rose oil, reducing damage to tomatoes by 45,5%.

Professor Arimura notes that the key component of REO is beta-citronellol, which is known for its insect repellent effects. In addition, rose oil attracts mite predators, which creates an additional barrier to plant protection.

This research opens new perspectives for the development of safer and more environmentally friendly plant protection methods. Based on scientific findings, new organic farming systems can be developed and effective and natural pesticides can be created.

Rose oil represents a promising alternative route to agricultural pest control. Its effectiveness and safety make it an attractive option to replace chemical pesticides. Research in this area not only helps improve organic farming methods, but also preserves biodiversity and ecological balance in nature.
