Hermann Samuel Staub
Hermann Samuel Staub

Phraseologism: Comments are superfluous.

Meaning: Everything is clear, obvious, understandable without explanation.

Origin: The expression was made popular by the famous German lawyer, author of comments on commercial law G. Staub (1856-1904). In his oral presentations, he tried to state his position as clearly, exhaustively and reasonably as possible, so that no one would have any questions, and he would not have to return to the topic. He was quite successful in this, and therefore, as a rule, he ended his speech with the words: "Comments are superfluous." When the famous lawyer died, a joke was even born in the German capital that supposedly you can read his favorite phrase on Staub's tombstone: "Here lies Staub. Comments are superfluous."

Random phraseology:

I love my motherland, but with strange love!

Meaning:

About true, unofficial patriotism, which feeds on a purely individual, unique perception of the motherland.

Origin:

From the poem "Motherland" (1841) by M. Yu. Lermontov (1814-1841): "I love my homeland, but with a strange love! // My mind will not defeat it. // Neither glory bought with blood, // Nor full of proud trust Peace, // The cherished legends of the dark antiquity // Do not stir in me a joyful dream. // But I love - why I don’t know myself? - // Her steppes are cold, // Her boundless forests are swaying, // The floods of her rivers like seas..."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Ants don't like to work 05.06.2020

The incredible industriousness that ants supposedly have is a myth. This conclusion was reached by researchers from the United States of America, who observed ant colonies for several years.

Entomologists Daniel Chabrono and Anna Dorhaus did not believe in the myth of industrious ants and decided to conduct an experiment to find out how these insects actually behave. The study, which lasted for two years, showed that ants in general are very lazy creatures.

As part of the observations, scientists marked insects from several colonies with different colors, and then set up cameras that monitored the ants. The experiment was carried out, among other things, in order to study working relationships in insect communities.

As a result, it turned out that only about two and a half percent of the insects behaved as it is commonly believed, that is, they showed diligence. The rest of the ants either did nothing at all (25 percent) or mimicked vigorous activity, working only occasionally (70 percent). At first, the researchers simply could not believe their discovery, so they suggested that the ants work, for example, in shifts. But no, further observations have confirmed that the industriousness of ants is just a myth that has no real evidence.
