What social behavior can occur in spiders?

Most species of spiders are focused on a solitary lifestyle, but there are species that can be called social to one degree or another. A group of spiders builds a common web, which allows you to increase the captured biomass per spider. Sometimes common nets are so large and strong that birds and bats come across in them. Some species, such as Anelosimus eximius, approach the eusocial behavior of bees or ants in a number of ways. In a colony of such spiders, a dominant female appears, while the rest of the females are non-reproductive and only look after the common offspring, a mechanism similar to swarming is also seen, when a group of females separates from the colony and emigrate to a new place.

Is it worth believing the centenary calendar?

Attempts to predict, at least in general terms, the weather for many years ahead were made as early as the 1652th century, first in Nuremberg by Mauritsius Knauf for 1658-1670, then by an associate of Peter I, general, scientist and "warlock" Yakov Vilimovich Bruce (1735 -100) XNUMX years ahead. These attempts were not crowned with success. Only in our time, on the basis of an analysis of the influence of terrestrial and cosmic factors, quite successful forecasts are made, which, however, are not recognized by professional meteorologists.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Siemens Gamesa wind turbine generates 359 MWh per day 16.10.2022

The prototype offshore wind turbine 14-222 DD, manufactured by the German-Spanish company Siemens Gamesa, one of the largest manufacturers of wind turbines, has set a world record for the output power obtained from a single turbine in 24 hours - 359 MWh. This would be enough for a medium-sized electric car to travel 1,8 million km.

The first electricity from the turbine was received recently, on the territory of a test center in Denmark. Rated at 14 MW and scalable up to 15 MW with Power Boost, this unit is designed for offshore installations.

By increasing the propeller diameter to 222 meters and using 108 meters of blades, the SG 14-222 DD increased its annual energy output by more than 25% compared to the previous model.

In addition, the turbine design has fewer moving parts, resulting in improved performance while maintaining reliability. And standardized production processes and a fully streamlined supply chain shorten the time to market for this model, which is scheduled for series production in 2024.

One such giant can provide enough energy to power 18 households a year.
