What the hell brought me to this galley!

Jean Baptiste Poquelin (Molière)
Jean Baptiste Poquelin (Molière)

Phraseologism: What the hell brought me to this galley!

Meaning: Regret for his own indiscretion, which put the speaker in a difficult, unpleasant position.

Origin: The primary source is the comedy Scapin's Tricks (1671) by the French playwright Jean Baptiste Molière (pseudonym of J. B. Poquelin, 1622-1673). In his play, Scapin is trying to lure money from the miser Geronte for his own son under the pretext that his son was allegedly taken hostage by the Turks when he went to their galley. The miser's father feels sorry for both his son and money, therefore, counting out the coins, he repeatedly repeats: "And why the hell did he bring him to this galley!" (act. 2, yavl. 11). These words of Geronte brought to life another popular expression of Moliere: "I take my good where I find it."

Random phraseology:

Philosopher's Stone.

Meaning:

1. A mythical stone (among alchemists) that can turn base metals into gold, heal diseases and rejuvenate the elderly. 2. The beginning of all beginnings, the basis of all things (book).

Origin:

From Latin: "Lapis philosophorum". So medieval alchemists called a certain speculative and magical substance, with the help of which it was allegedly possible to turn ordinary metals into noble ones, for example, lead into gold, as well as treat diseases, restore youth, etc.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Antibiotics from cannabis 09.03.2020

Researchers from McMaster University (Canada) have identified an antibacterial compound produced by cannabis that could serve as the basis for the development of new drugs.

A multidisciplinary team of researchers has found that a cannabis chemical called cannabigerol (CBG) is an antibiotic against the methicillin-resistant, elastic family of bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

The scientists focused on a non-psychoactive cannabinoid called CBG as it had the most promising activity. To conduct research, it was synthesized.

The research team found that CBG has antibacterial activity against drug-resistant MRSA. Exposure to the cannabinoid CBG prevented these bacteria from forming biofilms, which are communities of microorganisms that adhere to each other and to surfaces. This destroyed their resistance to antibiotics.

The results in the lab were confirmed when mice with MRSA infection were given CBG. The findings provide evidence of the real therapeutic potential of cannabinoids as antibiotics.
