For fans of weekend hikes who prefer to relax on the water, the unusual option will be of undoubted interest. light catamaran, published in the Hungarian magazine "Ezermešter". This is a single-seat pleasure "boat" with a rowing foot drive, the basis of which is two beach air mattresses. They are used without changes or any refinement, therefore they retain their traditional purpose. And in order to go on a small voyage on them - for example, go fishing or just "ride" - it is enough to lay a small wooden frame on top with an ordinary folding chair attached to it, popular with summer residents and pensioners.

Since air mattresses are purchased (ready-made) products, we will dwell in more detail on the base frame of the catamaran. It is assembled from wooden planks with a section of 40x20 mm and consists of two longitudinal supports 1700 mm long and crossbars fastening them, one front 640 mm long and two more 1100 mm each. Between themselves, the supports and crossbars are connected by furniture bolts with wing nuts - for ease of assembly and disassembly. At the same time, the front and middle crossbars are fixed flat (the first is on top of the supports, the second is on the bottom), and the rear is from the bottom and edge: so that it enters the transverse gap of the inflatable balloons of each mattress. This pairing is enough to do without additional frame connections with mattresses (although, if necessary, you can fasten it additionally)

Catamaran (click to enlarge): 1 - longitudinal support (2 pcs.); 2 - frame cross member, middle; 3 - frame cross member, front; 4 - pedal (2 pcs.); 5 - thrust (2 pcs.); 6 - propeller blade pad (metal plate, 2 pcs); 7- collar of the rear cross member; 8 - clamp of the middle cross member; 9 - rowing blade (2 pcs); 10 - pedal loop (2 pcs.); 11 - bolt with wing nut (6 pcs.); 12 - frame cross member, rear; 13 - air mattresses.

After the base frame is assembled, a folding chair is installed on its middle and rear crossbar and attached with metal clamps from a steel or duralumin strip.

It remains to install the aforementioned rowing drive - two foot pedals that reciprocate two blades bent twice from thick rubber from automobile cameras. The pedals are metal plates having a hinge made of a window hinge, which, in turn, is attached to the front cross member. The plates are connected to the blades in a special way - curved (see fig.) metal rods from a bar with a diameter of 6 mm, the hook-shaped ends of which are screwed with M4 bolts For convenience assembly-disassembly pedal loops can also be attached to the crossbar using bolts with wing nuts.

The final assembly of the catamaran is carried out in shallow water near the shore: air mattresses are laid on the water, and the frame with the chair and the drive is carefully lowered and aligned with them accordingly.

To protect the wood from excessive wetting, all frame elements are carefully impregnated with drying oil and painted in several layers with oil paints or waterproof varnish.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Cyborg cockroaches 19.03.2015

Scientists from Texas A&M University (USA) equipped a cockroach with a microchip, from which two electrodes were directed to the nerves that control the legs of the insect. This made it possible to control the movements of the "cyborg" with the help of electrical impulses and to control the movement of the insect from the remote control.

In laboratory tests, researchers were able to control the movements of a cockroach about 70% of the time, and in field tests, up to 60%. The microchip is powered by a tiny lithium battery, so that the total mass of the "backpack" placed on the insect's back does not exceed three grams. Scientists noted that although cockroaches are able to carry loads five times their body weight, in the end this can reduce their endurance.

Scientists plan to use such cockroaches as miniature robots that will perfectly cope with movements in hard-to-reach places, in addition, cameras and sensors can be attached to their body to collect the necessary data. Further research will be aimed at studying the possible habituation of insects to the effects of electrical impulses and the potential failure to execute commands.
