Why did projects for diversion of northern rivers to the Volga appear and then disappear?

One of the features of the Caspian Sea is the strong fluctuations in the water level in it. When the Aral Sea began to dry up in the 1960s, it was noticed that the level of the Caspian Sea was also dropping. This was evident in the expansion of the coastal strip and the appearance of large new beaches. They sounded the alarm: it is necessary to save the sea. It was then that the notorious projects of transferring the northern rivers to the Volga sounded.

While the reasons were being discussed, while projects for diverting rivers were being clarified and rejected, time passed. In 1978, they were surprised to notice that the level of the Caspian began to rise. At first, the sea ate the beaches and flooded the newly built boarding houses near Makhachkala on the low flat part of the coast, then it moved closer to the railway. Now it was no longer necessary to save the Caspian Sea, but to save people from it. But in 1995, the water level in the Caspian Sea suddenly stopped rising. Everything has stabilized.

The need to transfer the northern rivers to the Volga has disappeared. How long?

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Belgium to build artificial energy island 08.03.2023

Belgium will create the world's first artificial island in the North Sea.

Elia presented a sketch of this project. She also said that the island will be named after the Belgian princess Elisabeth. It will be located 45 kilometers off the Belgian coast and will serve as a link between offshore wind farms and the onshore high voltage grid. The total capacity of wind turbines will be 3,5 GW.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2024 and be completed in 2026. The island is expected to be the first block of an integrated European maritime power grid that will connect various nodes and countries. For example, Belgium wants to build additional joint links with the UK and Denmark.

This will allow the country to access the vast amount of renewable energy needed to make its industry less dependent on fossil fuels in the short term.

In recent years, the concept of artificial energy islands has gained attention as a potential solution to meet the growing demand for clean energy. These islands can provide a reliable source of renewable energy and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, they can serve as an energy storage and distribution center.

“We are proud to support this project through which we, as a Belgian consortium, can support our country in achieving climate goals. The combined experience of Jan De Nul and DEME as offshore specialists in dredging, rock armor and offshore energy is an absolute added value ," said Julie De Nul, director of the Jan De Nul Group.

According to the consortium, Princess Elizabeth Island will be the world's first man-made energy island that combines both direct and alternating current. The island's high-voltage infrastructure will connect wind farm export cables from the Princess Elizabeth Area, and also serve as a hub for future connections to Nautilus in the UK and TritonLink in Denmark.

In general, these facilities will facilitate the exchange of electricity between the countries, as well as being linked to the giant offshore wind farms in the North Sea, which will subsequently provide Belgium with large amounts of renewable energy.
