Who and when discovered the satellites of Mars?

The moons of Mars (Phobos and Deimos) were first discovered by the American astronomer Asaph Hall (1829-1907) in 1877.

The most striking thing, however, is that the presence of two satellites on Mars was predicted back in the middle of the 1667th century by the English writer Jonathan Swift (1745-1694) and the French philosopher Voltaire (1778-XNUMX). Speaking in the famous "Gulliver's Travels" about the achievements of the Laputians in the field of astronomy, Swift reports that "they discovered two small stars or two satellites orbiting Mars." In this regard, the names of Swift and Voltaire are assigned to two craters on Deimos.

Less well known, but no less interesting is the fact that in the Georgian epic, dating back to the middle of the 50th century, one of the parameters of Deimos' orbit is indicated very accurately (much more accurately than in Gulliver's Travels): "In the sky of this star (Mars) is another star, whose orbit is 280 eji", which, when translated into modern units of length, is about 150 thousand kilometers (1 eji is equal to about 3 kilometers). The length of the orbit of Deimos, according to modern data, is 147 kilometers.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What do we not see in the sky?

"Black holes". They absorb light. Such a hole in the Magellanic Cloud, with a diameter of only 6 km, has the mass of ten of our Suns! There are also supermassive "black holes" a couple of kilometers in size and a hundred solar masses.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Smell left and right 03.04.2000

As psychologists from the University of California (USA) have shown, the perception of smell depends on which nostril to inhale it.

Thirty-two volunteers were given eight common scents to smell, including lemon and mint. The subjects had to answer questions about the pleasantness or unpleasantness of the smell and what it actually smells like. The snuff was taken first with one nostril, then the other. It turned out that the right nostril tends to evaluate odors more positively than the left. But the left nostril more accurately determines the origin of the smell.

Experimenters believe that the differences found are associated with long-known differences in the activity of the two hemispheres of the brain. Each nostril sends signals to its own hemisphere. The left is more rational, reasonable, the right is more emotional. In accordance with this, the nostrils evaluate odors.
