Who is Hippocrates?

In many medical institutions on the wall we can see a document placed in a frame - the so-called Hippocratic oath. This is an oath that doctors take after graduation. What is this oath and who was Hippocrates? Before the era of scientific medicine in which we live, there was a type of treatment that depended entirely on sorcerers and medicine men. Then, more intelligent medicine was developed in ancient Egypt and India.

The ancient Egyptians were good diagnosticians. They had medical schools, they practiced in surgery. But the treatment of diseases was still in the hands of the Egyptian religion, with prayers, incantations and sacrifices as elements of the treatment.

Scientific medicine originated in Greece when a group of people who were not priests became doctors. The most famous of them, Hippocrates, who lived around 400 BC. is called the "father of medicine". His approach to medicine was scientific. He set aside all superstition, magic and spells. He and his students made careful notes of the cases they encountered.

Some of their observations are still valid today: fatigue for no reason means illness. When sleep overcomes a delirium, this is a good sign. If pain is felt in any part of the body and there is no reason for it, this is a disorder of mental activity. Hippocrates was convinced in his ideas of who a doctor was and what he should be. This is embodied in the Hippocratic Oath, which, along with many, contains the following ideas:

"I will follow such a system of behavior that, according to my ability and sound judgment, will only benefit patients, and I will refrain from everything harmful and evil. I will never give poisonous drugs, even if asked for it, nor will I give such advice ... Whatever I see or hear in connection with my profession or not, but if it cannot be spoken openly, if it concerns human life, I will not divulge, considering that it should be kept secret.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Neuromorphic chips for artificial intelligence 02.08.2013

Artificial intelligence excites the minds of mankind for more than half a century. Millions of works have been written on this topic and hundreds of films have been made. Modern philosophers, psychologists and sociologists are trying to predict, or even just give their opinion about how a machine will behave when it becomes fully conscious.

At the same time, most scientists are inclined to believe that at this level of technical development, using modern technologies and electronics based on silicon, it is impossible to create artificial intelligence. Hopes are pinned on quantum electronics, but it is still in its infancy.

Be that as it may, Swiss scientists from the University of Zurich, together with scientists from the Higher Technical School of Zurich, as well as colleagues from the USA and Europe, managed to create neuromorphic chips that, when connected to a network, are able to imitate some of the cognitive processes of the human brain. Scientists have succeeded in getting such AI to perform complex tasks that require context-sensitive decision-making and short-term memory, which, according to scientists, only primates are capable of besides humans.

Of course, this does not mean that in a few years humanity will learn how to create intelligent machines, but we have become one step closer to this.
