Phraseologism: Tricky mechanics.

Meaning: About a subtly conceived financial or other combination, a scam, etc. (ironic).

Origin: From the title of an illegal pamphlet "Cunning mechanics. A true story about where and where the peasant's money comes from", published (1874) in Geneva under the pseudonym "Andrey Ivanov". The real name of the author is Vasily Yegorovich Varzar (1851-1940). V.E. Varzar, once an active participant in the revolutionary organization Vperyod, later became the founder of industrial statistics in Russia. In this propaganda pamphlet, he clearly revealed the essence of the Russian tax system of that time.
