How was historical justice restored to the name of the planet Pluto?

After the discovery of Neptune, it quickly became clear that the observed disturbances in the orbit of Uranus cannot be explained only by the influence of Neptune on it.

A hypothesis arose about the presence of a ninth planet in the solar system. The American astronomer Percival Lowell (1855-1916) devoted 14 years of his life to searching for it, but never found it. It wasn't until 1930 that Clyde Tombaugh, a young assistant at the Flagstaff Observatory (founded by Lowell), noticed a 15th-magnitude asterisk in photographs moving among the other stars.

The ninth planet of the solar system turned out to be only 6 angular degrees from the place supposed by Lowell's calculations. After analyzing the available data, astronomers realized that this planet was photographed at least twice at the Lowell Observatory during the life of the scientist and 14 more times at other observatories.

The new planet was named Pluto - after the ancient Greek god of the realm of the dead - but the name was chosen because its first letters correspond to the initials of Percival Lowell. 76 years after its discovery, Pluto was stripped of its planet status by a decision of the International Astronomical Union.
