You can cut a perfectly round rubber gasket of any size or a belt for the tape drive mechanism of a tape recorder from a sheet of rubber using this simple device. In addition, it can be used to cut large diameter holes in plywood, plastic, plexiglass, cardboard and other similar materials.

Making it yourself is quite easy. From a sheet of plywood 10 mm thick, cut out three squares measuring 300x300 mm. Drill a hole d 8 mm in the center of one of them, and d 25 mm in the other two. By gluing the blanks, as shown in the drawing, we get the base of the fixture. In its central hole, fasten the M8 bolt with a nut.

Turn the central post from a brass bar d 12 mm and 80 mm long. Cut an external M12 thread at one end, and an M8 internal thread at the end hole on the other side.

The rotary sleeve has an axial hole d 12 mm and a threaded M10 perpendicular to it.

The carrier is a brass bar d 10 mm. At one end, a M10 thread 10 mm long is cut, and a radial hole M3 at the other end is made after reassembling the carrier with a rotary sleeve: it must be parallel to its hole d 12 mm.

The slider in the form of a corner is cut out of a duralumin bar. In its vertical wall, two holes d 10 mm are made - one under the carrier, the second, perpendicular to it and shifted down by 5 mm, - for the latch - a threaded pin with a semicircular groove. A groove with a section of 14x3 mm is sawn in the horizontal wall - under the knife. The material for its manufacture is a fragment of a hacksaw blade. In the vertical groove of the slider, the knife is fixed with a Mb screw.

The pressure plate is cut on a lathe from a metal plate 2 mm thick or a thicker sheet of plastic. Its central hole should have d 8 mm, and the outer diameter should be slightly less than the cut one.

The lock nut of the sleeve with M12 central thread has an outer diameter of 0 25 mm and a height of 15 mm. Saw a half-diameter transverse groove in it and make a longitudinal hole in this part. Then cut the M4 thread in its lower half, and drill out to d 5 mm in the upper half. Now tighten the halves of the nut with a screw, this way you can lock it in any position on the B-pillar.

Device for cutting large diameter holes (click to enlarge): 1 - handle, 2 - carrier, 3 - M6 screw, 4 - slider, 5 - knife, 6 - center post, 7 - lock nut, 8 - swivel sleeve, 9 - spring, 10 - M8 bolt, 11 - pressure plate, 12 - workpiece, 13 - base, 14 - threaded pin-clamp

The order of assembly of the device is as follows. Screw the carrier with a threaded shank into the swivel sleeve until it stops. Insert the locking pin into the slider so that its cylindrical recess coincides with the longitudinal hole. Putting the slider on the carrier, insert a knife into its groove and tighten with a screw. Attach a rotating handle to the end of the carrier.

A workpiece is put on the bolt rod protruding from the base. A pressure plate is installed on it, and then a central rack. You can tighten the thread with a wrench - a radial hole d 5 mm is intended for this. A spring is put on the rack, followed by a carrier assembly and, finally, a lock nut.

Having adjusted the position of the slider on the carrier and the bushings on the rack (in height), you can get to work.

The dimensions of the main parts allow you to cut holes with a diameter of up to 240 mm on this fixture, however, if you need a larger size, it is enough to replace only three elements: carrier, base and pressure plate. And for quick adjustment of the device to a given size, vernier risks can be applied to the carrier.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Genetic engineering for biofuels 19.06.2018

American scientists have found an enzyme that was previously considered a legend. With it, you can make a practically unlimited resource of biofuels.

As you know, the plant releases fuel by its own destruction, which occurs if there is enough lignin in the cells. An enzyme has been found at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States that is involved in its accelerated production. It produces amino acids in poplar, but it can also start these processes in other plants. Experts say that finding this enzyme was a stroke of luck, because it was considered a mistake caused by mutations.

The course of several experiments showed that the element does not have to be associated with DNA at all, which means that it can change the functional study of genes. Genetic engineering will be used to carry out these processes in an artificial environment. This will lead to the fact that with the proper approach it will be possible to obtain an increased amount of biofuels. In addition, this resource can be restored, which means big gains in commercial terms.
