What accident led to the discovery of a cure for beriberi?

At the end of the 19th century, the Dutch physiologist Christian Eijkman was sent to Indonesia to study the beriberi disease, from which the locals died in large numbers. One day, he noticed that laboratory chickens were showing symptoms of the disease. Analyzing the reasons, Aikman found out that the new cook began to buy for the army ration not brown, but white rice, which also went to feed chickens. The scientist again began to give them brown brown rice, and soon the chickens were cured. Already other biologists continued Aikman's research and found a medicinal component in raw rice - thiamine, or vitamin B1.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Bacteria produce fuel 25.03.2022

By studying the enzyme that bacteria use to catalyze this reaction, scientists have discovered key structures that control this process. True, experts do not yet know how to manage it.

Specialists from Northwestern University (Chicago, USA) were able to find bacteria that produce fuel. So, an experiment was conducted with methanotrophic microorganisms. They consume approximately 30 million metric tons of methane annually. In this way, bacteria turn greenhouse gases literally into diesel fuel.

Scientists still cannot understand how exactly this feature of bacteria can be used for the benefit of mankind. At the same time, while studying the enzyme with which bacteria catalyze this reaction, scientists have identified the main structures that control this process.

According to the researchers, meth has strong bonds, and therefore an enzyme that can break these bonds is a real discovery.
