How do different areas of the tongue react to basic tastes?

In many sources you can find information about the "map of tastes" - allegedly different zones of the tongue are responsible for the perception of basic tastes (bitter, sweet, sour and salty). This myth arose from a misinterpretation and translation into English of a 1901 work by the German scholar D.P. Hanig. He came to the conclusion that, although the parts of the tongue may vary slightly in the speed of reaction to a particular taste, the intensity of the taste is determined by them equally. The fact that any area of the tongue can capture any taste was later confirmed by other researchers.

How long is the Great Wall of China?

The Great Wall, or, as the Chinese call it, the Long Wall, stretched across the whole of Northern China for 4 kilometers. It began to be built in the 9th-6rd centuries BC, when individual Chinese states were forced to defend themselves from the raids of the nomads of Central Asia. All work on this gigantic building was completed in the 10rd century. The western part of the Great Wall has been preserved in its original form to this day. Eastern - collapsed and in some places turned into an earthen rampart. The width of the wall at the base is XNUMX meters, at the top - XNUMX meters, the height - XNUMX meters.

Approximately every 200 meters on the wall there are quadrangular watchtowers with loopholes. At the top, a paved road runs along the wall. Once upon a time, military units and convoys could quickly move along it. Today, some sections of this road are covered with asphalt, and cars drive along the Great Wall.

The western part of the Great Wall runs along the loess plateau in the upper reaches of the largest Chinese rivers - the Yellow River and the Yangtze. Loess is a rock that is inflicted by rivers. Huang He and Yangtze originate in the Tibetan Plateau (this is a whole country, which is formed not only by mountains, but also by plateaus).

From the foot of the mountains to the coasts of the Yellow and East China Seas stretches the Great Chinese Plain, formed by the valleys of these rivers. On it, the Chinese grow rice and many other crops. The Great Chinese Canal stretches across the entire Great Plain of China, the length of which is 1700 kilometers, built in ancient times.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

7nm Ryzen Pro 4000 processors for business laptops 14.05.2020

AMD announced the wide availability of a new line of mobile processors - Ryzen Pro 4000. The presented APUs belong to the 7nm Renoir family and are blood brothers of the already well-known Ryzen 4000 consumer APUs, released in March. At the same time, the new Ryzen Pro 4000 is designed for use in a business environment, with enhanced support and security technologies. According to AMD, the new series sets "a new standard for today's business notebooks."

The AMD Ryzen Pro 4000 mobile processor lineup includes three models with 4, 6 and 8 cores - Ryzen 3 Pro 4450U, Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U and Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U. As noted above, these are technically complete copies of consumer counterparts. Among themselves, all the new items are related by support for Simultaneous Multi-Threading technology, an improved Radeon Vega video core with 5-7 computing units and a 15-watt heat pack.

The new chips provide a significant performance boost over the Ryzen Pro 3000 predecessors and also outperform Intel competitors. AMD is calling the flagship Pro 4750U "the fastest processor for ultra-slim business laptops," claiming superiority over the rival Intel Core i7-1070U in several benchmarks, including PCMark 10, Geekbench v5, and Passmark 9. Interestingly, the Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U outperformed not only the class-matching Core i5-10210U, but also the older i7 in most AMD benchmarks. AMD also promises a noticeable improvement in battery life, including through a number of software optimizations: improved idle and activity detection (to turn off components as unnecessary and quickly turn them on when needed) and extensive power management capabilities with quick switching between several modes.

Laptops based on the Ryzen Pro 4000 will be released by Lenovo and HP, as well as other AMD partners. Appropriate models should go on sale by the end of this quarter. Speaking of Lenovo, the following Ryzen Pro 4000 based ThinkPad models have been confirmed: T14 and T14s Gen 1, X13 Gen 1, L14 and L15 Gen 1.
