What was the Cape of Good Hope originally called?

A natural disaster contributed to one of the most important stages in the opening of the sea route to India by the Portuguese.

In January 1488, Bartolomeu Dias (c. 1450-1500) was caught in a severe storm off the west coast of South Africa and his ship was blown out to sea. When the storm subsided, Dias headed north and was already off the east coast of South Africa. At the request of the team, he was forced to turn to Portugal and, skirting the southern tip of the mainland, called one of its ledges Cape Storms.

Later, the Portuguese king João II gave this cape a more optimistic name, which remains to this day: the Cape of Good Hope.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is a caste system?

In India, there was a system that divided people into different social classes, or castes. A person belonged to the caste within which he was born. Here is a list of castes, starting with the highest: brahmins (holy dignity), kshatris (warriors and messengers of God on earth, local rulers), vaishas (merchants and artisans), shudras (servants), panchamas (or non-caste). They did not belong to any of the castes and were considered inviolable. An Indian born within a lower caste could not advance to a higher one even with the help of wealth and education.

There are many rules of communication between people of different castes. The caste system is very strictly enforced in India. How did the caste system originate? According to one theory, it was established with the arrival of the Aryans in India around 1500 BC. e. They were tall, fair-skinned, with straight noses and straight dark hair. They were well organized into social groups, and the caste system helped them manage the local population despite being in the minority.

The Indian Constitution prohibits discrimination, that is, oppression, infringement of rights, on the basis of caste division. But the causes of the caste system have existed in India for thousands of years, and as a form of religious organization of society, the caste system is likely to continue for a long time to come.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Recognizing people through walls 02.01.2012

DARPA has announced that it is accepting proposals to improve technologies for detecting and recognizing biometric features through walls and other obstacles.

The Biometrics-at-a-distance program project involves the creation of sensors that can identify people at a distance and in a crowd, capturing various characteristic features, including the nature of the heartbeat.

Devices capable of detecting a person behind a wall or in the rubble will not surprise anyone today. Ho DARPA expects something fundamentally more. We are talking about increasing the working distance (now such devices are effective at a distance of less than 10 m and only for not too thick walls).

And most importantly, the new technology should use the individual nature of the heartbeat, which is as unique for different people as fingerprints and the pattern of the iris.
