How did the kite help Benjamin Franklin strengthen US independence? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? How did the kite help Benjamin Franklin strengthen US independence? In 1752, the American educator, statesman and scientist Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) conducted a famous experiment. During a thunderstorm, he launched a kite with a metal wire (antenna), holding it with an electrically conductive silk thread. As soon as Franklin put his hand close to the metal key, which he tied to a silk thread, a bright spark immediately appeared. Thus, Franklin demonstrated that thunderclouds accumulate a powerful electrical charge, and lightning is an electrical "spark" between poles, one of which is a charged cloud, and the other is the earth's surface. Franklin was lucky that he survived his bold experiment: some other researchers who tried to repeat it died on the spot from a powerful electrical discharge that pierced their body. The accomplishment of Franklin was significant not only from the point of view of physics, through this experiment, the American colonies declared themselves on the scale of global culture. Franklin showed the whole world for the first time that not only Europeans, but also the inhabitants of the New World have the scientific potential to make a worthy contribution to the victory of the era of reason. When a quarter of a century later, Franklin represented the newborn United States of America at the court of the French king and asked for the support of the young state, he enjoyed well-deserved respect not only as a politician, but also as a scientist who managed to "tame" lightning. Thus, his kite helped in no small measure to strengthen the independence of the United States. Author: Kondrashov A.P.
