When did the first submarine appear?

The first submarine is considered to be the ship of Cornelius Drebbel, built by him in 1626 for the amusement of the London nobility. In an exciting underwater journey on the first submarine, not a bit like modern submarines, 20 people could simultaneously go. To ensure water resistance, the wooden hull of the ship was covered with oiled leather.

The submarine dived to a depth of 5 meters and was rowed.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why are there tides?

The periodic rise of water in the oceans (high tide), and then a decrease in level (low tide) occur due to the attraction of the Moon and the Sun. The height of the tides depends on the relative position of the Earth and its satellite, the Moon, and solar attraction can slightly increase or decrease this height.

The difference in sea levels at high and low tide can range from a few centimeters in the Baltic Sea to 20 m in some bays of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. During the new moon and full moon, the height of the tides is especially high, in the first and last quarters of the moon it is noticeably less.

Attempts have been made and are being made to adapt this phenomenon for the generation of electricity (tidal hydroelectric power plants).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Tunnel under the Yangtze 07.12.2007

For the next World Expo due to open in Shanghai in 2010, a double road tunnel 9 kilometers long and over 15 meters in diameter is being built under the mouth of the Yangtze.

There are two German tunneling shields with a diameter of 15,43 meters - the largest in the world. In a relatively soft soil from river sediments (silt, sand and clay), the shields pass 400 meters per month.

The rapid development of the road network in China required the construction of many tunnels. In 2006, the country purchased from different manufacturers, mostly German, more than fifty tunneling shields.
