The box (Fig. 17, A) is used for very many card tricks. It can be of great help to the magician, if he is not yet sufficiently skilled in the art of manipulation. This is a small box made of wood, well polished on the outside on all sides. The dimensions of its two components are as follows: inside 105x65 mm with a depth of 10 mm. Both parts are made exactly the same. Therefore, the total depth of the box (both of its halves) will be 20 mm.

Both the lid and the bottom must also completely match in appearance. The box is connected by hinges in the middle. When it lies open on the table, it can be closed with either side so that any half of it, if desired, can be both the bottom and the lid. This is the secret of the box.

If a specially prepared card, glued from two - speckled together - for example, the Queen of Spades and the King of Hearts, is put in a box, showing the Queen of Spades to the audience, then as soon as the box is closed and imperceptibly turned over by the other side, the audience, opening the lid, will see that the box contains the king of hearts. In this way, you can discreetly make instant card replacements. The box can be made of thick cardboard and pasted over with leatherette or other binding material. Remember: the main attention should be paid to ensure that both halves of the box are exactly the same.

Another device is made to the box (Fig. 17, B), which allows you to perform many additional interesting tricks. For this purpose, a simple thin plywood board or thin cardboard cut to the inside size of the box is used. Both the plank and the cardboard must be pasted over or painted in exactly the same way as the inner walls. This insert B must move freely inside the box and can serve as a false bottom or lid, hiding the card underneath. Depending on the trick, the box can be used with or without insert B.

Let's take an example. Let's say you put the jack of hearts in a box in advance - face to the bottom - and closed it with an insert. It is clear that the map will not be visible. Now, in front of the audience, we openly put another card in the box (on the insert), for example, the king of hearts, and then close the box and quietly turn it upside down. Opening the lid, the audience will see a jack of hearts and will have to admit that the king has somehow turned into a jack.

If a magician has two such boxes for cards, then he can perform many interesting tricks with them.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Simple greenhouse gas sensor 30.07.2020

Researchers from the Case Studies Department at Linköping University have developed a simple greenhouse gas flux recorder.

Until now, measuring instruments have been so expensive that society has had to rely on crude models to map greenhouse gas emissions. It is extremely important that scientists and enthusiasts be able to take as many measurements as possible at different locations. This will help to check if emission reduction measures really work. The scientists hope that their simple and cost-effective recorder could enable more of these measurements.

Methane, CH4, is one of the most important long-lived greenhouse gases that contributes significantly to global warming. Since the 1750s, its relative increase in the atmosphere has been greater than for other greenhouse gases. There are many different sources and examples, including incomplete combustion, natural gas and biogas processing, and microbial production in agriculture, wetlands, and lakes.

However, the large number of sources, which can vary greatly in ways that are not fully understood, makes it difficult to quantify gas flows. This further hinders the development of new strategies to reduce flows. In addition, the discovery that lakes, rivers and flooded forests are major sources of methane, by David Bastwiken and colleagues back in 2011 and later, shows that scientists do not know all sources of greenhouse gases.

The scientists built and tested a simple recorder based on the open source Arduino hardware. Parts are available at many electronics stores; they can be ordered online for about 200 euros. Scientists have also developed more accurate ways to calibrate the methane sensor. This will allow greenhouse gas fluxes to be measured at very low cost.
