EFFECTIVE FOCUSES AND THEIR CLUES Lightning box. Focus secret Directory / Spectacular tricks and their clues Focus Description: A large box of boards fastened with planks is brought onto the stage. The magician asks two spectators to come on stage to inspect the box. The box is inspected, then the performer sits in it (Fig. 100).
The box is covered with a lid and locked with four locks, then tied with a rope (Fig. 101).
The audience leaves the stage. An assistant comes out with a large handkerchief pinned to a folding bar. The assistant stands on the box, picks up a bar with a handkerchief and, unfolding it, raises the handkerchief to the neck (Fig. 102).
The assistant asks how long the audience will give for the performer to disappear from the box. Spectators set the time. The assistant counts: "One! Two!" - and raises the bar with a handkerchief above his head. "Three!" - says the performer. The bar with the handkerchief is lowered, and the head of the performer is visible from behind the bar (Fig. 103). The performer removes the handkerchief, jumps off the box.
The box is untied and unlocked. The lid is opened, and an assistant crawls out of the box (Fig. 104).
This illusion has been performed since the end of the XNUMXth century, when it was known as the Mysterious Chest. Subsequently, a box was used for the same number, and it received its current name. Each illusionist brings something of his own to the performance of this illusion. We will describe the simplest, most effective and easy-to-do method. Despite the fact that the trick has been in the repertoire for over eighty years, its demonstration is always accompanied by success. This number can be demonstrated everywhere: both on the stage, where a cover is used for its performance, which we will describe here, and on the arena of the circus, where a hanging tent descending from above, or folding screens are used to mask the secret. Props: Box with a lid and a secret exit. Rope (halyard) for tying the box. Four padlocks. A curtain-spread nailed to a folding bar. Focus secret: The whole secret lies in the fact that the box has a hatch that opens inward, through which you can get invisibly to the audience. The device of the hatch is very simple, and its manufacture is quite accessible to every fan. On fig. 117, A shows the inside of the wall of the box with five rails on the screws. A hatch is built into this wall. Two side and top rails are attached tightly, while the middle two are attached only to the hatch, which is shown in Fig. 117,B, G.D.Zh.
The hatch is made as follows: a hole is cut obliquely in the finished box, sufficient for the passage of a person. After that, the hatch boards are attached to two rails. The boards are attached very carefully so that there is no rocking or skew. Then the two middle outer slats are turned over. The ends of the screws at the outer rails that prevent closing the hatch are cut off. Do the same with the screws on the hatch rails. The hatch should easily, without friction, fall into place and be removed just as freely. To the lower ends of the side middle rails, the P bars are turned over. This is necessary so that the hatch cannot pop out from below. Brackets C (Fig. 117, A) cut flush into the floor of the box, and they hold the entire hatch with planks P. At the top, in the middle of the rails, holes 3 are drilled (Fig. 117, A, B, D and G). A bolt E is inserted into this hole, the head of which is made exactly the same as the heads of all the other screws that attach the rails to the box boards. From the inside, a plate is attached to the outer rails, having the same thread as the bolt E. After installing the plates, you can insert the hatch and, having wrapped the bolts with a screwdriver, thereby provide insurance against the hatch falling out from above. It will now hold firmly in place and be indistinguishable from the rest of the box. This is the whole secret. For convenience, you can make two hatches, one on each long side of the box. Over time, the holes into which the bolts E are inserted are cushioned, stains from hands and scratches from a screwdriver form around them. You need to follow this and change the rails in time, since you cannot allow them to somehow stand out. Locks for the hatch can be set to automatic, acting by pressing on the top of the hatch. The hatch technique is now perfectly clear; understand how to use it. On fig. 117, G shows a hatch inserted into the wall A. In order to open it, you should slightly unscrew the bolts E from the slats with a screwdriver and, holding the top of the rails with both hands, swing the top of the hatch towards you, lifting it, remove the lower slats П from the brackets From the bottom of the box, and then set the entire hatch aside and crawl out into the hole formed (Fig. 118).
After that, the assistant climbs through the hatch into the box (Fig. 119) and, holding the top of the rails with both hands, inserts the lower planks P inside the brackets C, then attaches the hatch in place and screws both bolts E with a screwdriver, thus fixing the hatch tightly in the wall of the box.
Getting out of the box, you should not touch the hatch, because if it falls, it will make it difficult for the assistant to pass and then put it back in place. Four pairs of lock brackets are attached to the drawer and lid with screws so that it can be locked with four padlocks. Even if you allow the audience to tie the box themselves, there is nothing to fear that the hatch will be blocked: climbing through, the assistant will always be able to move the rope a little to the side, and after she finds herself inside, restore everything again. You should get out, putting your hands forward. With careful manufacture of the box and careful adjustment of the rails, the hatch becomes completely invisible, and the audience will not find anything even with the most careful examination. When installing automatically locking locks in hatches, an upper share rail is used inside the box. The entire mechanism is mounted under this rail. Locking occurs when pressing on the rails. When pulling the lever with cables, the sunroof is unlocked. We do not give the dimensions of the box, it depends on the taste and desire of the amateur. "We only advise not to make the width of the hatch already 40 cm, so as not to impede the passage. The box is shown according to the description of the external effect. After the spectators have tied the box and locked it, they are asked to step back and stand at the front of the stage. At this time, the performer, having opened and put aside the hatch, can get ready "and, as soon as the assistant stands on the box and opens the cover-curtain (see Fig. 118), the illusionist must immediately, but very carefully get out of the hatch, climb onto the box and quietly take hold of the bar to which the curtain is attached. Fingers under the bar should be kept near the same place where the assistant holds. As soon as the performer takes the bar, the assistant immediately lowers her hands, and the illusionist stands up to his full height on the box, hidden by the veil, lowering his head as low as possible. At the count of "two", he raises the bar above the assistant's head, and at that time, she, having jumped off the box under the cover of the cover, quickly climbs into the hatch and immediately closes it, wrapping the locking bolts E. At the count of "three", the performer raises his head from behind the cover (see Fig. 119) and, seeing that the assistant is hidden from the eyes of the audience, jumps off the box, folds the cover and, making sure that the hatch is closed, invites the audience to untie and open box. The cover is made in such a size that its width is enough to disguise the performer and the box (up to half), and the length is 60-80 cm longer than the length of the box. The plank is made on a loop. For convenience, handles are screwed to it from the inside. You should keep the cover on the fly, hanging it in front of you to about half the box. It is necessary to strictly ensure that it does not move at all at the time of the rearrangement of the performer and assistant. This illusion can also be shown with a screen, closing the box, but the method we have described is much more effective, since the box is always in full view of the audience. You can show without a cover, then the performer crawls out of the hatch into the hole in the back curtain of the stage. The curtain is pinned in advance with a pin at the desired height, its ends are nailed to the floor at a distance of 30 cm from the middle cut so that the curtain does not move at all during the passage. This method has the inconvenience that the box must be placed close to the back, while with the method described above it can stand anywhere on the stage. Professional artists usually complicate this trick by tying the performer in a bag with a secret exit, and then putting him in a box or putting him there, "shackled" in hand shackles. The performer, as soon as it is closed, has enough time to free himself from the bag or from the shackles, and the assistant has enough time to get into the bag or put on the shackles. Sometimes, instead of a box, a chest is made, pasted over inside with cloth and upholstered instead of slats with thin iron strips that mask the opening of the hatch. This does not change the secret of the illusion itself at all. Author: Vadimov A.A.
