Due to what is the therapeutic effect achieved when using medicinal leeches?

Obtained in 1884, an extract from the body of a leech, called hirudin, served as the starting material for the isolation and study of biologically active substances that enter the bloodstream of the body when using leeches.

Previously, it was believed that the treatment occurs mainly due to the fact that the leech sucks out "bad blood". Indeed, a leech sucks from 3 to 5 cubic centimeters of blood. The effect of bloodletting, for example, with high blood pressure, is a well-known and useful thing.

However, the main thing, as studies have shown, is the composition of leech saliva, which is absorbed by body tissues. It is believed that its components as a whole have been studied, but a number of substances introduced by leech saliva still require deciphering.

A medical leech injects over 100 bioactive drugs into the body in one session. They have an anti-inflammatory effect, activate local capillary circulation, improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to tissues, prevent thrombosis and dissolve fresh blood clots. Clinically, this is expressed in the rapid disappearance of heart pain, the elimination of edema, the restoration of impaired blood circulation in the brain and other organs.

There is every reason to call the leech a pharmaceutical mini-factory. The most important enzyme of the leech secret is hyaluronidase, a vector by which all other biologically active substances that make up the secret are absorbed by the body, penetrating into tissues to a depth of 10 centimeters.

Thus, the therapeutic effect is achieved not by suction, but, on the contrary, by injection.

What is soil?

Did you know that at one time almost all the soil that exists in the world today was bare rock? For millions of years, nature has worked tirelessly on them, weathering and destroying them, crumbling into pieces that we call soil. The process of destruction of rocks proceeds in different ways. Cracks appear in them as a result of the hot and cold seasons. The stone wears away under the action of clouds of sand driven by the wind. Ice chips scratch its surface. Sea waves rolling on coastal rocks undermine them and slowly but surely turn huge boulders into small crumbs. Even some bacteria secrete acid, slowly destroying rocks.

Soils vary in size and the number of particles present in them. A particle of soil consists mainly of sand. Heavy, cold and damp clay soil is formed by closely adjacent particles. And loam is a cross between sand and clay. Stony soil contains a large amount of gravel - pebbles. Humus or peat soil is formed as a result of the decomposition of dead plants and, on the contrary, contains very few solid particles, even the smallest ones.

In general, any soil on which there is at least some kind of vegetation has a very complex composition. In addition to rock fragments, it includes mineral salts, organic substances resulting from the process of decay, and living organisms (mainly lower plants).

The value of soil depends on its ability to supply plant roots with nutrients and provide access to air and moisture. An important role is played by the living beings in it. If you sterilize the soil, kill them, then it will cease to be fertile. However, even if the soil contains all the substances necessary for the plant, nothing will grow on it if there is no water in it, which dissolves these substances.

Good soil soaks up moisture like a sponge in a bowl of water. Therefore, plants in such soil can continue to live even during long periods of drought.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

world map of happiness 10.12.2006

The first world "map of happiness" was compiled. It was drawn by the English psychologist Adrian White on the basis of sociological surveys on the degree of satisfaction with life, conducted in more than a hundred countries of the world. He also used statistical information about the standard of living, the state of health care and education in different countries of the world.

It turned out that the most happy residents of Denmark, Switzerland and Austria, the least - African countries and countries - members of the CIS. Such studies are of limited value, since ideas about a happy life vary significantly among different peoples.

However, White hopes his map will catch the attention of governments that care little about their people.
