How did dogs appear?

All representatives of the dog family are descended from an animal that resembled a wolf. This ancient wolf-like creature, the progenitor of dogs, roamed the forests approximately 15 years ago. It, in turn, descended from a small weasel-type animal that lived about 000 years ago and was a distant ancestor not only of dogs, but also of bears and raccoons. These are the closest relatives of the dog living today. If a person tamed a domestic dog and was pleased with it, then he hated and feared such animals as the wolf, coyote, jackal and fox. They were called "wild dogs".

Domestic dogs are relatives of typical wild dogs: wolves, coyotes and jackals. They all belong to the same branch of the dog family. They are so closely related that domestic dogs can come into contact with wolves, coyotes, jackals and produce large numbers of offspring. But they cannot mix with foxes. Foxes belong to another branch of the canine family.

At some time, a very long time ago, an ancient man tamed several wild animals. These dogs may have been wolf cubs. They could be jackals or some other member of the wild dog family. Man has discovered that these animals can be useful. Becoming more civilized, he realized that a dog can become a good friend, a reliable guard of the house and livestock. Over time, special breeds of dogs were bred for special purposes.

Dogs with long noses are designed to sniff out game. Energetic, fast dogs were bred to chase animals. Strong, hardy dogs pulled carts, other dogs were bred for guard duty. Thus, different breeds of dogs arose.

Why is Antarctica the highest continent on Earth?

The average height of the indigenous (subglacial) surface of Antarctica is only 410 meters, while the average height of the surface of all other continents is 730 meters.

Nevertheless, it is Antarctica that is considered the highest continent on Earth. But the fact is that Antarctica is covered with an ice shell, the average height of which is 2040 meters (2,8 times the average height of the surface of all other continents).

Near the South Pole, the thickness of the ice shell reaches 3800 meters. The total mass of frozen water concentrated in Antarctica is 30 million cubic kilometers. Under its weight, the earth's crust on this continent sagged up to 950 meters.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Titanic is being eaten by bacteria 16.07.2018

In 15-20 years, there will be no trace of the infamous ship.

The voracious micro-organisms that feed on rusty iron at the bottom of the sea are called extremophile bacteria. Extremophiles got their name because of the ability to live and breed in the most difficult conditions. They tolerate high and low temperatures, high and variable salinity, huge pressure, lack of oxygen and lack of light. These are the conditions at the bottom of the Atlantic.

In 1991, rust samples were taken from the sunken ship. A decade later, in 2010, scientists discovered metal eaters on them. After more in-depth research, they came to the conclusion that the legendary Titanic had 15-20 years left before it completely disappeared.

“Due to the fact that the Titanic is at a depth of 3800 meters, it cannot be saved,” Professor Henrietta Mann from Dalhousie University in Halifax (Canada) sadly states. “I only hope that our study will at least contribute to deepening knowledge about bacteria. There are oil platforms in the ocean, steel pipes and other structures that can "melt" just like the Titanic. It would be good to know how to protect them."
