Where do grasshoppers lay their eggs?

From time to time, huge clouds of grasshoppers (or locusts) appear in some areas and devastate the land. They are mentioned in the Bible among the seven troubles of Egypt. Every year, in most parts of the world, they cause damage to crops that amounts to thousands of dollars.

There are many varieties of grasshoppers, but they are all very similar. They have strong jaws, three pairs of legs, and usually two pairs of wings. The first pair of wings is stiff and straight, while the second pair is thin, folding under the first pair. The back pair of legs used for jumping is generally long and well developed. The female grasshopper has an egg-laying organ at the tip of its abdomen. This organ is called the ovipositor. Grasshoppers have long, sword-shaped ovipositors.

Some species of locust make holes in the ground with their ovipositors, lay their eggs there and cover them with a sticky substance. Some katydid grasshoppers make holes in the stems for their eggs, while others lay their eggs in rows on the leaves. Grasshoppers are divided into two main groups: long-whiskered and short-whiskered. Short-whiskered grasshoppers are sometimes referred to as "locusts" and include the common brown grasshopper. They have short antennae, short ovipositors, and three-jointed tarsi. Their "singing" is rubbing their hind legs against their wings. Their "ears" are located in the abdominal part at the base of the hind legs.

Long-whiskered grasshoppers, which include green meadow grasshoppers, noisy katydid grasshoppers, and wingless crickets, have antennae much longer than their body and four-jointed legs. Only males 'sing', rubbing each other with the bases of their rigid wings. In some countries, grasshoppers are eaten, but most people try to get rid of them.

What could the 1912 automaton, considered the world's first computer game, do?

In 1912, long before the advent of the prototypes of modern computers, the Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres y Quevedo designed the electromechanical machine "El Ajedrecista", which is considered the first computer game in history. The device was a chessboard with a king and a rook moved by a machine with the help of electromagnets, as well as a king of a different color, which was moved by a person. The automaton, albeit not in the minimum number of moves, was guaranteed to complete this chess endgame with checkmate to the opponent.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Face mask with microphone and speakers 22.07.2021

LG has announced an updated version of its high-tech air-purifying face mask called LG PuriCare. The new version received built-in speakers and a microphone.

LG first announced the PuriCare mask last year. It uses replaceable air filters and built-in fans to filter the air. LG says the new version has a smaller and lighter motor, as well as built-in microphones and speakers that amplify the wearer's voice. The first version of the mask muffled the wearer's voice quite a bit.

The technology, which LG calls VoiceON, "automatically recognizes when users are talking and amplifies their voice through the built-in speaker." The new LG PuriCare mask weighs 94 grams, has a built-in 1 mAh battery and charges in two hours via USB. LG claims that it is quite comfortable to wear continuously for about 000 hours.

LG does not claim that the mask will in any way protect against coronavirus, although there were such hints at the time of the announcement of the first version. Some air purifiers and masks trap particles the size of the virus that causes COVID-19. However, one cannot say that PuriCare protects against the coronavirus without scientific studies of this particular product or more detailed information about the types of filters that are used in the mask.
