How do fish fly?

If fish were to fly through the air like birds, they would flap their fins like wings. But no fish fly that way.

But how do flying fish move? Their wings are front fins, usually very large. When a fish is in flight, it spreads its fins and holds them at a certain angle to the body. Sometimes the hind fins are also involved.

But at first, the fish accelerates in the water, swimming rapidly with a part of the body protruding above the surface. It covers such a certain distance, picking up speed with the help of vigorous movements of the tail. Then she straightens her fins and holds them in this state, the swiftness of this movement and lifts her into the air.

Flying fish can soar hundreds of meters above the water. Sometimes they hit the crest of the wave and gain additional speed with the movement of the tail. Thus, flying fish glide not only over water. They can fly so high that they land on the deck of a large ocean liner.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is seasickness?

Seasickness is associated with the concepts of balance and dizziness. Our balance organs contain stiff hairs surrounded by fluid. When we move in any direction, the fluid moves the hairs. These hairs send a signal to the brain that gives us the sensation of moving in that direction. Under normal conditions, this fluid, called lymph, and the movement of the hairs are such that our body can easily adapt to changes, and we manage to maintain balance.

But what happens on the ship? As the deck changes position under our feet, our lymph also sways up and down, from side to side. Sensitive hairs also oscillate from side to side. Therefore, the signals they send to the brain also switch from one to the other. As soon as some kind of “order” enters the brain, another, completely opposite “order” immediately follows.

The ship's position changes so frequently that the brain receives signals that contradict each other! The result is confusion in this part of our nervous system. Therefore, we soon have dizziness, headache, darkening and sparks in the eyes, cold sweat, gagging and vomiting - that is, all that seasickness consists of.

Unfortunately, the only remedy for seasickness may be to bring the lymph and balance organs to a calm state or to prevent such a situation when signals from the balance organs affect us. All known remedies for seasickness affect the body in the second way. Until now, no remedy is known that would make the hairs and lymph stop moving.

Therefore, a remedy for motion sickness has the following effect: it paralyzes the part of the brain through which the signal passes, or paralyzes the vomiting center in the brain, or desensitizes certain nerves.

One of the most effective ways to counter seasickness is to go to the most stable part of the ship, to the center, and stay there, trying to move as little as possible. It is also important to remember that one must refrain from fear, because fear and imagination only increase seasickness!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>
