Does an ostrich have a voice?

From whichever side you look at the ostrich, it is a strange and wonderful bird. The ostrich is the largest bird, but it cannot fly. It uses its small wings to balance them while running fast. The head and neck of this bird are almost devoid of feathers. The long legs of an ostrich end in only two fingers. The plumage of the male is black or dark brown, with the exception of wing feathers and a white tail. The plumage of the female is much duller and shorter.

As you might guess, such a bird can hardly have a singing voice, but the ostrich does have a voice! Most of the year, ostriches emit only a loud, hissing sound, but during the mating season, they “cut through” a booming roar that is clearly audible even at a great distance. Three or four female ostriches lay their eggs in one shallow hole dug in the sand, and take turns incubating them, at night they are replaced by a male.

Ostrich eggs are the largest of those that are laid by living birds. The ostrich is very greedy. Its diet consists mainly of plants, berries and grains. And in order to better digest food, the ostrich sometimes swallows large stones, pieces of iron and other objects!

People breed ostriches for their magnificent feathers. The first plucking can be carried out even before the ostrich is one year old, and each time new feathers will grow in place of the plucked feathers.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where did ice cream come from?

Fifty years ago, people only ate ice cream in the summer. Now it is eaten all year round. It was invented in the East long before schoolchildren first tried ice cream in waffle cups.

Explorer Marco Polo saw people eating ice cream there. He liked this idea so much that he brought it to Italy. From there, ice cream came to France and became popular with noble people. They tried to hide the ice cream recipe from the common people. But, of course, people soon recognized the taste of this delicacy, and ice cream became popular among them. It soon spread throughout the world and even reached the United States.

The first ice cream factory began operating in Baltimore, Maryland in 1851. But the production of ice cream did not become widespread until the beginning of our century, when new refrigeration units appeared.

Ice cream consists of cream, milk or dairy products, and sometimes eggs are added to it. For taste, vanilla, chocolate, berries, nuts or fruits are added to ice cream. The recipe for regular ice cream is as follows: for 80-85% of cream or other dairy products, take 15% sugar, from 0,5 to 4,5% flavor and 0,3% stabilizer.

A small amount of stabilizer is added to make the ice cream more uniform and prevent the formation of coarse ice crystals. For this purpose, edible gelatin is usually used.

When you eat a third of a cup of vanilla ice cream, you get as much calcium, protein, and vitamin B as in half a cup of milk, and as much vitamin A as in a whole cup.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

A new type of artificial leather 14.02.2019

An international team of scientists has developed a radically new type of artificial leather. The sensors, created by American and Canadian researchers, will help patients experience the same sensations that are inherent in real skin.

Researchers at the University of Toronto and Connecticut have been working to create a mechanism for human empowerment. In the process of development, they managed to find an opportunity to maximally naturalize their creation. Special sensors will allow people with organ transplants to feel atmospheric pressure, feel any vibrations and the influence of magnetic fields.

"Electronic skin", as experts biologists and chemists called their work, is aimed at helping patients after amputation of limbs. The plastic material, similar to natural skin, is absolutely elastic, which allows it to be used for imitation as widely as possible. The sensors are made of silicone tubes filled with liquid iron oxide nanoparticles, sheathed with copper wire. This technology allows sensors to track and perceive virtually any change in the environment, such as sound vibrations or magnetic field boundaries. Such properties of the material are betrayed by scientists so that the corresponding reactions of the skin-gadget track all changes in the environment and can inform the patient about a possible danger. The prototype, presented by scientists, does not cost more than five dollars, which gives reason to assume its wide distribution.

In the future, the authors of the development are sure, based on this technology, new materials will be created that are visually close to the appearance of real leather. However, for this it is necessary to ensure their complete safety and biocompatibility.
