How are chess, rice and ruin related?

There are many parables about how one person offers another to pay him for some service as follows: he will put one grain of rice on the first cell of the chessboard, two on the second, and so on: each next cell is twice as much as the previous one. As a result, he who pays in this way is bound to be ruined. This is not surprising: it is estimated that the total weight of rice will be more than 460 billion tons.

What is a virus?

Viruses are tiny particles that cause various diseases in humans, animals and plants. The word "particles" may seem strange, but let's see why we use it. Viruses are so small that they can seep through even the finest filters. Their tiny size does not allow them to be seen with a conventional microscope, so when studying viruses, scientists are forced to use photographs taken with an electron microscope.

Unlike bacteria, they cannot be bred in sugar syrup: they grow and multiply only in the presence of living matter. Being parasites, they are entirely dependent on the organism in which they are located. Due to the fact that they are so small and it is extremely difficult to artificially create conditions for their growth, many researchers are inclined to think that viruses are not living organisms at all, but some kind of middle link between living and inanimate matter.

Viruses are sources of disease, many of which are known to all. By affecting different organs of the body, each group of viruses causes different types of diseases.

Many skin diseases, such as chickenpox, smallpox, measles, are the result of the activity of one group of viruses. Another is the cause of diseases of the central nervous system: rabies, inflammation of the brain, infantile paralysis. The third affects the internal organs and causes yellow fever, influenza, the common cold, viral inflammation of the liver, and many others.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Interaction between quantum magnets programmed 06.12.2021

A team of German physicists from the Center for Quantum Dynamics at Heidelberg University have changed the interaction between microscopic quantum magnets - spins. In the study, for the first time, magnets retained their original orientation for an extended period in isolated quantum systems.

The scientists used a gas of atoms that had been cooled to a temperature close to absolute zero. Using a laser, the atoms were heated and separated electrons at macroscopic distances from the atomic nucleus. These "atomic giants", known as Rydberg atoms, interact with each other at distances of almost a millimeter.

The research was to control the dynamics of quantum magnets using methods from the field of nuclear magnetic resonance. In their experiments, the researchers used specially designed periodic microwave pulses to change the spins of atoms in order to control the interaction between them.

Microwave pulses respond to Rydberg atoms in billionths of a second. At the same time, atoms are hypersensitive to any external influences, no matter how microscopic they may be. In their experiments, scientists managed to preserve the macroscopic magnetization.

The forces between particles, atoms, molecules, or even macroscopic objects such as magnets, are determined by the interactions of nature. For example, two closely spaced bar magnets rearrange themselves under the influence of magnetic forces.

These studies are important for a better understanding of the underlying processes in complex quantum systems.
