Which animals can change houses in a chain?

When a hermit crab grows out of its shell and goes in search of a new home, a situation may arise when its relatives move along the chain. Other hermit crabs inspect the abandoned shell, and if they find it too big, they wait. Moreover, as new candidates arrive, a queue is formed, ordered by the size of individuals. When a crayfish finds the first shell suitable, it leaves its largest crayfish behind and starts a chain of movements.

Do all cats purr?

When something smells delicious or you just feel good, you sometimes hum rather: "Mmmm! .." When the cat wants to express its pleasure, it purrs. The purring sound is produced by the vibration of the vocal cords. The cat draws air into the lungs, and it passes through the vocal cords along the way.

Thus, if desired, the cat can allow the vocal cords to vibrate with air pressure. When a cat doesn't want to purr, she doesn't use her vocal cords - and no purring! Of course, when we talk about a cat, we usually mean a domestic cat. But there are still many members in the cat family. Did you know that the tiger, lion, leopard, jaguar, coguar, ocelot, and lynx also belong to the cat family? As for the reproduction of various sounds, a domestic cat, in addition to purring, can also meow, howl and yell.

Other types of cats make different sounds. Lion and tiger can roar. Jaguar and leopard make a sound similar to a loud cough or bark. But the most interesting thing is that due to the different structure of some of the bones of the throat, neither a lion, nor a tiger, nor a jaguar, nor a leopard can meow! But all cats, regardless of their size, have the same body proportions. If you enlarge the photo of a cat to a large format, you will see that it is very similar to a tiger.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

The meaning of life helps to sleep peacefully 26.07.2017

Many elderly, and not only elderly people, sometimes have problems with sleep: at night a person often wakes up, sleeps poorly, and in the morning he cannot shake off his drowsiness.

Usually, in such cases, some medications or physiological procedures are prescribed, but the doctors themselves do not hide the fact that it is better, if possible, to manage with purely psychological means. One of the psychological ways to make sure that you sleep well, scientists at Northwestern University found out: for good sleep, our lives must have meaning.

Researchers surveyed more than eight hundred people aged 60 to 100 about how they sleep and whether their lives feel meaningful. The "sleepy" questionnaire included thirty-two questions, the "for life" questionnaire - ten, and among them was, for example, this: a person was asked to rate how much the following statement applies to him - "I like to think about what I did in past and what I'm going to do in the future."

It turned out that those who are satisfied with their own lives, who know why they live, sleep better. They, say, are 63% less likely to suffer from sleep apnea - this is the name for short-term respiratory arrests, due to which sleep is disturbed and, as a result, daytime sleepiness, fatigue appear, memory and intelligence worsen, and working capacity decreases. Also, those who live “with meaning” are 52% less likely to have restless legs syndrome, when, due to discomfort in the legs, a person is forced to constantly move them, which again, like apnea, disrupts sleep - and further down the list.

Only older people took part in the experiment - among them were both women and men, both white and black, while none of them suffered from age-related dementia. But it seems that a similar pattern can be found among younger people - although, of course, young people rarely think about the meaning of their lives.
