Tobacco smoking is a common cause of malignant tumors of the oral cavity, larynx, bronchi and lungs.

Constant and prolonged smoking of tobacco leads to premature aging due to disruption of tissue oxygen supply, while spasm of small vessels occurs, which makes the appearance of a smoker characteristic, as a yellowish tint of the whites of the eyes, skin and its premature wilting appear, and a change in the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract affects his voice, while sonority is lost, timbre decreases and hoarseness appears. The action of nicotine is especially dangerous in youth and old age, when even a weak stimulating effect disrupts the nervous regulation.

The harmful effects of smoking on the female body have been established. In women who smoke, the onset of menopause is accelerated, sexual activity is inhibited, during pregnancy the likelihood of miscarriage, premature birth, pregnancy complications, and the birth of weakened children increases. Tobacco smoking also contributes to the rapid development and aggravation of the course of diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, gastritis, gastroenteroclitus, myocardial dystrophy, endocrine (hormonal) disorders. And with peptic ulcer of the stomach or duodenum, thrombophlebitis, obliterating endarteritis, Raynaud's disease, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, recovery without quitting smoking is generally impossible.

The harm from smoking is so significant that in recent years a number of countries have introduced measures that are directed against this bad habit. These measures are as follows: advertising of tobacco products and sale of tobacco products to minors is prohibited, smoking is prohibited in public places and in transport.

In our country, they also do not advertise tobacco products on television, but, unfortunately, there is enough information about tobacco products and their new "achievements" on billboards that abound in their number and variety in all cities.

I would also like to note the fact that the place for the "Warning of the Ministry of Health" on packs of cigarettes produced at tobacco factories in Russia is given much less than information about the dangers of smoking on packs of cigarettes from foreign manufacturers. In addition, little is said about the dangers of passive smoking, and in fact, according to some reports, it can be much more dangerous than smoking itself. This is because cigarette smoke contains a large amount of unfiltered harmful substances that freely enter the lungs of a non-smoker when they are inhaled.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Treatment of infections with electric current 03.11.2019

The original method, developed by scientists from the Swanson School of Engineering (SSOE) at the University of Pittsburgh (USA), is designed to treat infections caused by metal implants. The researchers suggest using electrochemical therapy to increase the ability of antibiotics to kill microbes.

Titanium has many properties that make it a suitable material for implants: low density, high stiffness, high biomechanical strength-to-weight ratio, and corrosion resistance. Today, different types of implants are made from titanium: from dental to joint prostheses. However, there is a persistent problem with metal implants: their surface is an ideal place for germs to accumulate, causing chronic infections and inflammation in the surrounding tissue. So, about five to 10 percent of dental implants fail and must be removed within 10-15 years so that the infection does not spread to the blood and other organs.

Added to this is the "crisis of antibiotics": many microbes develop resistance to certain drugs. Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh have found a way to help antibiotics fight infectious diseases.

The essence of their method is that a weak electric current is passed through a metal implant. The charge damages the cell membrane of the microbe attached to the implant, while not damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. Damage increases the permeability of the bacterial cell, making the microbe more susceptible to antibiotics. Most antibiotics usually target cells that will proliferate and bypass dormant, dormant microbes - which can cause infections to recur. Electrochemical therapy causes stress in all microbial cells, including sleeping ones.

The researchers tested their technology against Candida albicans (C. albicans), one of the most common and harmful fungal infections associated with dental implants.
