Who built the first canals?

Around the fifth century BC, the Chinese began work on the construction of the Great Canal of China between Hangchjouwan and Beijing. Its total length was 1600 kilometers. It is considered the oldest canal in the world. The main part was built already in the XIII century AD. e. Around 2000 B.C. e. The Egyptians built a canal that connected the Nile to the Red Sea, which was the forerunner of the modern Suez Canal.

Subsequently, the royal canal between the Tigris and the Euphrates was built under Nebuchadnezzar, the ruler of Babylon. The Romans also built canals in many parts of the empire. Around the XNUMXth century, under Charlemagne, construction began on a system of canals that would connect the Rhine, Meuse and Danube.

In the future, the development of canal networks in Italy, France, Belgium and other European countries took place. In the second half of the 20th century, there was an increase in the number of canals in Great Britain for the transport of coal and other goods. Construction continued at the same pace until the advent of railways in the XNUMXs of the XIX century. The Manchester Ship Canal is a good example of how a canal can link a distant city to the coast.

Between 1759 and 1830 no less than 4790 miles of canals were built in England. Many invested in canals, and some companies that owned the canals paid high dividends. In the old days, boats along the canals were pulled or pushed by hand, then horses and mules began to be used, which wandered along the path along the coast and pulled the loaded ship behind them.

Nowadays, boats move along the canals with their own motors or are towed by horses. Before the invention of locks, canals could only be built in places where there was flat terrain.

Which country is the largest in South America?

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world after Russia, China, Canada and the United States. It occupies almost half of the entire continent of South America.

The Portuguese expedition of Pedro Cabral was the first to set foot on the soil of Brazil. The Portuguese were looking for new routes to India, but they discovered an unknown land, which they called the "Land of the Holy Cross". So Portugal had a new colony.

The Portuguese dreamed of piles of gold and precious stones. However, their search was unsuccessful. The most valuable, according to the Portuguese settlers, in the new colony was the pau brazil tree, from which bright red paint was obtained. The country was named after him - Brazil. Most (about 60%) of the territory of Brazil is covered with tropical forests, which in South America are called selva. Selva covers the entire vast valley of the Amazon River and its tributaries. This dense, impenetrable thicket is also called the "lungs of the planet": it replenishes oxygen reserves in the Earth's atmosphere.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Portable supercomputer for unmanned vehicles 15.01.2016

At CES 2016 in Las Vegas, Nvidia unveiled the Drive PX 2 supercomputer for self-driving cars. It is the first of its kind and is equivalent in power to 150 Apple laptops - Macbook Pro.

Drive PX 2 is a computer that is built into an unmanned vehicle to help it navigate. In particular, it is equipped with technology that allows the car to "learn" to avoid unexpected situations on the road, such as the sudden appearance of a child or a cyclist.

The supercomputer is equipped with 12 processors, the processing power of which is 8 teraflops. At the same time, the entire device is comparable in size to a student's lunchbox.

Drive PX 2 is capable of performing 24 trillion operations per second, as well as managing 12 video cameras, lidar, radar and ultrasonic sensors that help recognize objects on the road and safely bypass them.

Nvidia has partnered with automaker Volvo, which plans to incorporate a supercomputer into some of its self-driving car prototypes.

Nvidia also announced the Drivenet platform, which is already being tested by the company on its own self-driving vehicles. It is capable of recognizing five different classes of objects, including pedestrians and motorcyclists.

The technology has already been tested by Audi: with its help, cars were able to independently read road signs "better than a person would have done." In addition, the head of the company noted that Drivenet can recognize other machines even in bad weather, such as heavy snowfall.
