For many operations performed in training workshops and technical circles, a portable universal tool such as a dental drill would be very convenient. However, it is almost impossible to acquire one, and, as always in such cases, the question arises: is it possible to make something similar on your own?

The main scarce part of the device is a flexible shaft. But after all, the flexible shaft of the speedometer of a car or motorcycle works almost on the same principle - and this decommissioned part is already easier to get.

I used a cable from some truck: it turned out to be more suitable for attaching both to the motor and to the working head.

Universal Mini Drill

Structurally, the mini-drill has developed from three parts: a motor, a flexible shaft and a working head with a standard three-jaw chuck from a drill, with a shortened Morse taper. As a drive, I used an electric motor of the DKS-1 type with a power of 35 W for a voltage of 220 V. Any other motor with a power of up to 60 W and a speed of 2700 - 5000 rpm can also be used.

The designs of the working head are simple and can be seen from the figure. Ome is assembled in this sequence. A ball bearing No. 18 is pressed onto the shaft until it stops, after which, together with the shaft, it is inserted into the groove of the housing, a spacer sleeve is put on and a second similar bearing is pressed into it until it stops. Before assembly, both bearings are thoroughly washed in kerosene, and after pressing, they are lubricated with grease or technical petroleum jelly. The shaft should rotate easily, without jamming, in the housing. After making sure of this, screw the front and rear covers of the case. Then the end of the cable is inserted into the shaft and the union nut of the flexible shaft is screwed on.

Scheme of a mini-drill and tools for it (click to enlarge): 1 - cartridge (No. 1A), 2 - front cover, 3 - ring (D16T), 4 - working head housing (D16T), 5 - tube, 6 - shaft (Art. 45), 7 - ball bearing, 8 - back cover (D16T), 9 - ring (D16T), 10 - flexible shaft, 11 - adapter sleeve (D16T), 12 - corner (D16T), 13 - base (textolite B 10 mm), 14 - electric motor, 15 - rear corner. A - cutter assembly and holder scheme, B - polishing head and its holder

The engine is installed on the base in the following order. On a board of suitable size or a thick textolite plate, two corners are fixed with M4x10 screws, and an electric motor between them. An adapter sleeve and an engine are attached to the right corner with M5X12 screws; the ends of the studs connecting the front and rear covers of the motor are inserted into the left. Then the second end of the flexible shaft cable is connected, and its union nut is screwed onto the adapter sleeve. On the base of the motor, it is also possible to place a capacitor in a casing and a switch. As the legs of the base, you can use rubber corks from medical vials.

To work with a mini-drill, you can also make a microtool. It can also be ready-made dental burs, grinding discs, drills with a diameter of up to 6 mm. For home-made ones, it is enough to make a holder-base, and the working part can be interchangeable: milling cutters, emery stones, circular saws. They are put together with washers on the holder and secured with nuts. To work with disc cutters and saws, the working head must be fixed permanently, for example, using inserts and a table vise. It is better to make a special table With an appropriate mount for the working head.

Using a mini-drill, it is convenient to drill holes in plastics and metals, sharpen cutting tools, polish parts, mill complex surfaces, engrave, cut sheet material, and perform many operations.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Nanocomposite on graphene and silicon will improve lithium-ion batteries 06.08.2014

Specialists from the South Korean Institute UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology) have developed a technology that will improve electric batteries.

Recently, attempts have been repeatedly made to use nanocomposites based on graphene and silicon to improve the electrochemical characteristics of batteries. Unfortunately, a common weak point of such batteries is a low initial current efficiency, electrical contact failure and destruction due to significant volume changes during the charge-discharge process. This leads to a significant decrease in capacitance and an increase in internal resistance.

UNIST scientists have proposed an innovative approach to solving the problem. They used amorphous silicon nanoparticles on a graphene framework (a-SBG) in the anode of a lithium-ion battery. The a-SBG structure provides a uniform distribution of silicon islands (particles smaller than 10 nm) on both sides of the graphene sheets, thereby ensuring the stability of the anode during repeated charge-discharge cycles.

The composite showed outstanding elasticity: the particle size is restored to the original after each cycle, and the thickness of the electrode is reduced as a result of self-compacting.

As a result of the experiments, a specific capacity of 468 Wh/kg and 288 Wh/kg was demonstrated with a specific power of 7 kW/kg and 11 kW/kg, respectively.
