What practical use did the earrings in the ears give to the pirates?

Traditionally, sailors were allowed to wear an earring after their first crossing of the equator or after they had rounded Cape Horn. Many of them believed that the earring is a talisman that protects against seasickness or prevents its owner from drowning. However, many pirates wore this jewelry for practical purposes - in the event of their death, the earring became a payment for transportation to their relatives so that they would be properly buried. And the pirates who were in charge of firing cannons found even more banal uses for them - earrings served as earplugs during a loud shot.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

When did you start milking cows?

Ancient manuscripts report that humans consumed milk and dairy products, and cows provided milk even before there were any manuscripts. In an ancient temple discovered near Babylon, they found wall paintings depicting the process of milking a cow.

It is believed that this temple is about five thousand years old. Nowadays, cows are milked on the right side, while earlier it was milked from behind. This man was sitting on a special chair, while others were pouring milk into a special vessel on the ground. Still others poured milk into large earthenware vessels. It seems that the process of milking a cow was well organized already five thousand years ago.

Today, milk is obtained mainly from cows and goats. But in other parts of the world, milk from other animals is also used. For example, in Asia it is a camel, a horse or a yak. Eskimos and Laplanders drink reindeer milk. Buffaloes provide milk in India and Central Asia. Sheep are milked in Europe and Asia.

Milk contains several hundred different chemical elements, but most of all it contains calcium, phosphorus and protein. Since milk is easily digested, calcium, phosphorus and other minerals are quickly and efficiently absorbed by the body. Milk sugar (lactose) and the main milk protein (casein) are found only in milk.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Alternate Reality for Scouts 28.03.2013

The American Intelligence Community Research Agency (IARPA) has announced a competition to develop a game that represents an alternate reality. The project, called UAREHERE, according to the scouts, "may provide opportunities for high-quality social, behavioral and psychological research in a setting close to the real thing." In other words, the game will create the most realistic interactive version of the real environment, which will provide the best conditions for the study of human psychology and social behavior.

Alternate reality games are plots (possibly fantasy) played out in the real world, that is, using the existing environment as "settings". To achieve any goal that is not always clear to the players, real phone numbers, transport, the Internet, search for keys, meetings with strangers and acquaintances, etc. are used. Moreover, the player often does not know which item or event is random, and which is a mere coincidence.

The plot of such a game is thought up by a group of people, but the participants often have an unpredictable influence on the plot, which forms new storylines. One of the most popular games of this kind was The Beast, created for the "promotion" of Steven Spielberg's film "Artificial Intelligence". About 3 million people from different parts of the world took part in this game.

For scouts, such games are of particular interest, since they allow not only to study the behavior of people, but also to develop new, more effective methods of work. Due to the fact that the game is played in a real everyday environment, the number of conventions is minimized. At the same time, the goals of the game are unknown to ordinary players, which plays into the hands of the scouts-organizers. Playing in an alternate reality can become a valuable tool for conducting the largest social and highly specialized research.
