Black cohosh (crow). Legends, myths, history

Black cohosh Dahurian (Daurian cimicifuga)

Black cohosh - stately handsome men with a dissonant name. This name was given to a species that is not used in gardens - a stinky black cohosh (ordinary stinker), but you can’t throw out a word from a song - that’s what they are called, although people came up with this name as a thank you, not a reproach, because they used the plant as an insecticide . However, in the German tradition, black cohosh has a much more elegant name: "silver candles".

Once upon a time, they were made by an old master who lives on the outskirts - it seems to be in the city, but somehow separately. His candles were always of excellent quality - they did not smoke, they did not smoke, they burned for a long time and evenly, illuminating everything around with a magical silver light. The old man was strange, and the inhabitants of the city said that he knew all the plants in the garden, all the animals in the forest, the fish in the water and the birds in the sky, that he was a sorcerer and a werewolf. Only a merchant visited him - no matter how strange the old master seemed, his candles sold perfectly.

Once the merchant was late and reached the old man only in the evening, but the owner was not at home. The merchant waited and waited, was about to go home, but suddenly noticed what seemed to be a silver candle lit at dusk, followed by another and another. What motivated the merchant - history is silent, but he went along the path indicated by the inflorescences of plants he had never seen before and stumbled upon an old man who was collecting brushes of elegant flowers in a huge basket. The basket was already almost full and the merchant, without showing surprise, volunteered to help carry it. At first it seemed easy - how much do flowers weigh? But it got heavier with every step. At the house of the old master it turned out that the basket was full to the brim with beautiful wax candles...

The old master died a few years later, during which the merchant did not tell anyone about what he saw, but then he could not stand it, he once told his friends over a glass of beer. They laughed at him, of course, but, oddly enough, the name stuck, and now in Germany they call black cohosh silver candles.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Created the highest quality laser 07.07.2017

For most people, the word laser is always associated with the term "accuracy". However, in the field of laser technologies, there is also a fairly large space for further improvements. An "ideal" laser should emit light with a strictly defined wavelength, but real lasers are far from ideal, and they emit light in a very narrow band of the spectrum. The bandwidth of the spectrum is one of the main characteristics of lasers that determine its quality, and one of the areas for improving laser technology is precisely to reduce this bandwidth as much as possible.

Recently, an international team of scientists has completed the creation of a record-breaking laser with a spectral bandwidth of only 10 MHz (0.01 Hz). For comparison, the bandwidth of the spectrum of most lasers used in science and industry is, at best, several thousand Hertz.

The second indicator of the quality of the laser is the stability of the emitted light, which determines how long the laser can emit a high-quality beam of light. The new laser, developed by specialists and scientists from the Federal University of Physics and Technology, Germany, and a scientific group from the JILA (Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics), USA, holds the record for both of the above parameters. In addition to a bandwidth of 10 MHz, this laser exhibits a beam stability of 11 seconds. This is enough time for the light emitted by the laser to cover a distance of 3.3 million kilometers, which is approximately ten times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.

The new laser system is of such high quality that it cannot be compared with any other existing laser. And in order to make comparative tests, scientists had to make two identical laser samples and compare them with each other. And to compare the quality of work, a complex system of mirrors and other optical components was used, which was a highly stable optical resonator, 21 centimeters long, tuned to a specific wavelength of light. In addition, other devices were used that made it possible to avoid the influence of such factors as fluctuations in atmospheric pressure, humidity and temperature on the measurements.

The measurements and experiments carried out by scientists allowed them to collect data, on the basis of which the main parameters of the new lasers were calculated. And further work in this direction, including the use of new materials for laser mirrors, technologies for lowering the temperature in the volume of the laser cavity, etc., will make it possible to reduce the bandwidth of the laser spectrum to a level of no more than 1 MHz.
