One of the biggest disadvantages of renewable energy sources (RES) is that they are difficult to store. The energy flow of renewable energy sources is extremely variable in time and space. The variability of wind, wave or solar power creates challenges for grid operators and raises doubts about the security of energy supplies. Of course, if you have a small windmill at your dacha, then you can store excess electricity in batteries. But if it is a wind farm of 10 MW or more, then the cost of batteries for it will be equal to the cost of the wind farm itself, and they will occupy a considerable area.

Some politicians, businessmen, scientists believe that renewable energy sources are not economically profitable, because In addition to them, it is necessary to resort to power plants using traditional energy sources as a backup source of energy, in case the wind does not blow or the sky is overcast. Proponents of this point of view argue that, unlike renewable energy sources, the required volume of gas, oil products or coal can be stored in a storage facility. But it is not possible to drive the sun or wind into the tank. Is it so?

The European Commission has funded a number of studies aimed at addressing this particular problem.

The first project concerns the beautiful island of Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, which has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The island's government has decided to cover 100% of the island's energy needs using renewable energy sources. The main role in the island's energy supply is assigned to the wind-hydroelectric system, which allows for the supply of renewable energy. In this system, five large wind turbines produce electricity that is fed into the grid for local use.

Excess electricity (for example, at night) is used to desalinate seawater and pump this water to the top of a hill, into an artificial lake located 700 m above sea level. When there is no wind or the electricity generated is insufficient, high-pressure water from the lake is sent down to hydro turbines and electricity is generated. When wind energy is again sufficient for local needs, the cycle of water storage in the lake starts again. This system will be operational in 2010 and Hierro's experience will be used by other EU islands and territories. The island currently receives its electricity from a 10 MW oil-fired power plant. When the new energy supply system is put into operation, the reduction in CO2 emissions will be 18,7 tons.

The second project is aimed at storing solar energy and concerns the area around the sunny city of Seville in southern Spain. In this case, the energy of the sun is concentrated by huge mirrors on top of a 50-meter concrete tower. Reflected sunlight heats the coolant (water), hot steam rotates the generator turbine. The revolutionary idea lies in the fact that with the sunset, the power plant continues to work. The fact is that during the day the sun's rays heat not only water, but also special containers with salt. When the sun goes below the horizon or the sky is covered with clouds, hot salts instead of the sun heat water, steam is produced and electricity is generated. In the daytime, the process starts again and the salts again store the energy of the sun.

These are just two examples. Some scientists believe that hydrogen and fuel cells could be another renewable energy storage option, others believe that electric vehicles connected to smart grids could be the solution of the future. In any case, it is unacceptable to say that it is better to resort to the use of fossil fuels instead of RES due to the impossibility of storing solar and wind energy. The undeniable fact is that fossil fuels are stored energy from the sun, and it is better to have something else in reserve for the moment in time when they run out.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Cow toilet 15.07.2023

Scientists from Germany decided to teach cows to use a special toilet. They believe this could help farmers reduce water pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Cow dung can be a problem, especially if they are in stalls where urine and feces are mixed. Because it produces ammonia, an indirect greenhouse gas.

The experiment was carried out on a farm run by the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology in Dammerstorf. Researchers Lindsey Matthews and Douglas Elliff of the University of Auckland said that the training was carried out according to the principle of "carrot and stick". To do this, they set up a special area called MooLoos, lined with artificial grass, where cows can safely urinate without endangering the environment.

At the first stage, the calves were driven into the MooLoos in turn and rewarded with food if they did their "easy job" there. The next step was to increase the distance to the toilet. If there were "accidents" in another part of the barn, the cows were sprayed with water. Quite quickly, 11 out of 16 calves were toilet trained.

Cows self-initiated toilet entry, producing an average of 15 to 20 urinations. And at the end of three-quarters, the animals were doing three-quarters of their urination in the toilet.

If in Germany the cows are mostly in barns, the next step is to see how the system will work in the context of New Zealand, where cattle spend most of their time in open units.

However, the animals are collected for milking and supplementation, so during this time they could use a special toilet. In addition, they can be installed outdoors. And even if such an approach is not very successful, scientists are convinced that it would still have significant environmental benefits.
